My FZ broke

My bike broke and I am sad  The connecting rod on cyl#1 broke and destroyed the cases! I am looking for an 87/88 1000 motor. What are the major differences between the 88 to 89 motors? I know the chain line and the front mounts are different but that is a little machining and fabrication. I am more concerned about the rear motor mounts, coils, cdi, Exhaust, air box, etc. should I continue to look for an 87/88 or should I broaden my sites and also look for an 89-91 1000
Thanks
Ahren

aaawww :(
I am sorry.

I know someone who had to do that swap and the only thing I remember them saying was the front engine mount was different.
So I guess the rear engine mount is the same?

I think you have to use the later model exhaust but an aftermarket if you are going to try and use the 88 ignition because no exup on the 88.

I think if you used the 88 pickup coil you could keep your ignition system.

Good point Chrissy, I forgot about the exup. I can’t think of any reason why the 88 cdi would no work on the 89. I don’t think the rev limiter or advance curve would be that different.

Can you tell me where the rod broke?
I am just interested.

I have not dissembled the motor yet but it is easy just to look in the big hole in the side! The rod broke just a little below the wrist pin (the narrowest part of the rod). I don’t know if you had your rods shot peened yet but I would look in to it! My motor was similar to yours Chrissy.

Well I am sending Jello's crank out to be lightened and balanced next month and I was considering Falicon's Knife Rods. I think I should get them now. I am scared :(

I don’t know if I just had a bad batch of rods or the rods are weak? Get the rods if you are that far into your motor!!! I am still pulling pieces of aluminum out of my shoes. I was just accelerating slowly and than bang there’s hot aluminum, oil and coolant up my leg! I will have to post some photos. I don’t mean to scare you Chrissy but I am kicking myself for not doing the rods when I was in there! :hissy

I think the rods are $1000us I do not have that much extra but I may have to not buy this thing for my watch.

There is ways like shot peening and heat-treating the old rods to make them stronger. I don’t know enough about it but maybe Jim can explain.

right, they offer a shot penning service at Falicon too.
I am waiting for them to call me back, so I can decide what to do.

MsHap, I know you said you dont have the money, but it is a worth while investment, maybe you should put the project off for a bit until you have the money. I have a 93 engine that grenaded good (got it with the parts bike) and it is missing the number 1 rod along with a good chunk of the block...

My plans for this winter are, send the rods and crank to Falicon for lightening and knife edging, 1040 kit, find some bigger cams (dont know where, but a local guy says he can weld and regrind my stockers) and maybe some head porting...

I know the whole scared feeling, when I got my 89, all I remembered was my 94 grenading the clutch, but as much as I have pounded this one (did the Factory oil mod trick), I no longer fear it, maybe the 94 was a fluke. I did however find that the rev limiter kicks in around 12,500 (happened to look down while wheelspin set in) even though the tach shows redline at 11000...

I am getting the crankwork done while I am away in October. I do not have a car so I have to be able to ride Jello when I am home :)

I am going to get the con. rods shot penned, hardened and balanced. It is only $284us for the 4 rods.

I am getting her new 6speed tranny undercut and getting the crank done and stuff so I think she will be happy with her old rods :)

Hey! Tell Falicon you are a racer and you get a discount, it is like 20%

I am freaking out now everyone is telling me about rod problems :)

I get a billet clutch basket and when I took mine out it was missing a piece!
I was like, "just in time!"
