Fricken got SCREWED AGAIN by the damn union.
Left a STEADY JOB for an apprentice opening for floorlayer with the local carpentry union in April. They said it would be at least 4 months and should get me to the point where the company would sponsor me through training. Well the place they sent me DIDNT WANT APPRENTICES but had to take us. After 2 weeks I was basically laid off as 'not needed anymore'. First he said we got caught up and it will be a week before we can get in the next buildings and he'd call. I left 5 messages and he didnt even have the balls to call back. Union rep was about as helpful as soggy paper.
Fast forward to friday. Got a call that a contractor needs help for the day unloading a trailer full of doors. One day thing. Better than nothing. Get there this morning and search for the contractors trailer and the job site (its in a mall and theres about 5 different projects going on with different Gen COntractors). Couldnt find any sign of the company. So I asked a bunch of guys walking around in the sites. NO ONE KNOWS who or where they are.

Supposed to start at 7. About 8:30 I got fed up with the bullshit of no one knows a thing. Got in my truck and left. Good thing I brought my sheet with places to apply in town. Filled out 6 apps around town and when I got back into my hometown filled out another one. Get home and there 3 messages for jobs I've applied for. One is for installing CABLE MODEMS!!!

another is a 3rd shift 10.50/hr and the other is a 8.60/hr thats with a staffing service (not thrilled but may have to)

Well I got a job interview later today for the local cable company hooking up their internet to customers. Should be interesting. The other 2 I'll call tomorrow. Rather put things together than do another customer service style job like Orkin.

Move to central Iowa Rob, I will get ya a job with me (we are hiring). Easiest job I have ever had for the money and I dont bust my ass with heavy lifting all day, although they are 10 hour days, but 3 day weekends are nice

LOL
Good luck with finding a job bro, sometimes it takes time, I know, but good comes to those that wait. Kinda funny with me, I went to college for motorcycle mechanics and now I am building home windows, pays better for less b/s...
What part of South Wisconsin u in? I am about 95 miles due west of Platteville...

good luck rob, something will come your way.
i am a bit worried myself as it looks as though a move back to the midwest is imminent. my g/f got a new job with american greetings in cleveland (where i grew up), but my profession isn't what i would call "in-demand" there. the coast is much better for me. the next few weeks will be nuts, and we have been trying to sort things out for the past month.

I'm 80 miles east of Plattville South of Madison by 35miles. Wouldnt be so bad but I have one former employer apparently playing games (wont return calls by possible employers doing reference checks), last one I'm thinking is a "fly by night" contractor" whose number comes back as something else. Also with the 900 employees at GM that took the buyout I gotta compete with those asshats also.

I'm in the same boat here in Nashville. Seems that everyone that had 25 years with Bell South (sux) took the early out and went back to school to get an MCSE. Now they have cut the local average starting wage for IT staff to about $35,k. In 10 years they'll all be gone but in the meantime it's a real fight to get an honest wage.
As to unions, I belonged to one for quite some time and still believe that a good union is a good thing but a bad union is extremely bad. The president of our union was bought off by the management during a critical contract negotiation. Eventually the idiots that elected him (he wasa football star at one point and evidently that made him qualified to certain groups of people) had to admit that he was screwin' the union and he was voted out by one of the biggest landslides I've ever seen. Too little too late though. By that time the management had raped the contract and everyone in the union.
If anyone is looking for work in the Nashville area, let me know. Not the best paying jobs out there but Dell, Inc. has several dozen positions available as does Nissan
Best of luck Rob !

Well worse comes to worse theres always truck driving. But they'll have to spring for hotels since I cant sleep in the back of a truck. Tried it when I was racing the few times I rode with the transporter driver.

Metro DC area has tons of jobs in just about all fields, but you have to contend with a really high cost of living and long commutes in horendous traffic.
Even with the housing slowdown skilled tradesman are still in demand. IT is always hot but a lot if it is contracted out so you may find yourself moving around every 2-3 years as contracts get rebid. Health care is hot too.
Best deal is working for yourself. I have a close to 30 years in a 9-5 job to bring in the base salary, provide health care and a pension. But with a van, tools and some handyman skills I still manage to bring in anywhere from .5 to $1K+ every month doing odd jobs. I'm not too proud to haul someone's trash, transport or change oil on a bike, assemble or transport furniture, clean a yard or house, etc. etc.
I have a job at Noon today assemblling and installing kitchen wall and base cabinets, $55/hr for 6-8 hours! (This isn't typical though).
As I tell my teenage kids, there's money to be made if you go after it.

Worked 8 hours on Saturday for this lady, ripped out a bunch of wall and base cabinets, sink, disposer, vent hood, dishwasher. then assembled and installed half dozen wall cabinets and a couple base cabinets. I didn't take a break all day.
And all I got for it was bad check!
Talk about cheesed off.

That bad checked cleared today--wheww. If she wants more of my time I'll insist on cash.
Heck Jason, I'll even haul your bike for you. How many boxes is it in anyway?

Just fooling with you jason. I know it is a labor of love. And once it's done I'm sure I'll be drooling over it.
That offer stands though if you need help moving things around the area (not to Seattle though).

I like to keep all my parts in the same room. That way they get to know one another and don't become adverse to me bolting them together.

Well I have the two items needed to successfully rob a bank here in town. A plastic water pistol and a bicycle.
Yep our inept local cops LOST a bank robber on a bicycle. Yes they were following him with a squad car and still lost him.
Just tossing sarcasm out.
