Does anyone know if a 91 fuel tank will fit on 89. I look up the part numbers but they are different from each other.
Side note -can anyone tell me how to decipher Yamaha's part numbers.
i.e. 3gm-24110-01-01 this one is for the 91 fuel tank.
3lk-24110-01-01 this one is for the 89 fuel tank.
Any help would be great.

Does anyone know how to decode the part numbers. Thanks Tim for the info. There's one on ebay that's pretty cheap. That is the last thing I need to get my other thou put back together, I think. I have to many parts and they are all over the place. One of these days I'll put everything together and see what I have or what I don't.

3LK-24110-01-01 this one is for the 89 fuel tank.

^^^ 1st 3 characters is model code/year/location
(e.g FZR1000 for Sweden) OF THE BIKE THAT THE PART WAS FIRST
DESIGNED FOR.

5 characters to describe the part
eg. all -24110- are petrol tanks
all -13440- / 13441 are oil filters
(all engine parts start with 1, body parts start with 2, electrics 8, etc)

3rd set of numbers (2 digits) is modification code, eg -00 for the first
design of the part, -01 for a slight change (eg stronger material),
major changes eg -10 (for a muffler which is designed to be quieter than
others due to noise laws in a different country).

Last set of numbers usually indicates colour code if the part is painted.
This is often -00 or left off/ignored.

There are exceptions.

Also, parts that Yamaha consider "generic" that can be bought from
any major factory (such as standard size o-rings and bolts and
washers) are part numbered 9xxxx-xxxxx.
For example, common engine o-rings are 90210-xxxxx.

part numbers

So, unless the part number is exactly the same, you can't tell whether a part is interchangeable between models?

I'm a bit late but yes all the EXUP fuel tanks 89 -95 are interchangeable.

Most of the time a part is interchangeable IF
the first and second groups are the same, only the 3rd group different.

eg
xxx-xxxxx-00
xxx-xxxxx-01

But there are many interchangeabilities (?) that you can't
tell from the part number without Yamaha's computer system.
For example,
many FZR-Genesis parts 2GH-xxxxx-xx
are swappable onto
FZR-Exup 3gm-xxxxx-xx
and
Thunderace 4SL-xxxxx-xx.
These you will not know without experience trying them out, or
Yamaha's computer system.

Better late than never creed12r. Thanks again for the info. I was hoping to get this tank cheap but someone started bidding on it. We will have to see what it gets up to.

Hotcam that is a great post!

that is the kind of awesome information I have no use for now but like 6months from now I will be trying to find and cannot. lol

also, that is one reason I really love the exup brotherhood and hate lots of other bike forums. Everyone here knows alot about the bikes and we have cool usefull discussions. Most other sites are full of posers who have a 600 that looks like everyone elses with a slipon and a power comander and they really are not even sure what that is.

I have been in a b*t**y mood all day lol

and guys that put extended swingarms on bone stock 600's should be water boarded. Those chrome calipers and neon lights do not add 100 extra hp!

Yeah I have learned heaps of stuff from a couple of forums including this
one, but most have heaps of clueless posers. I'm glad that I'm now in
a position to give back sometimes.

I hate when you are looking for real help and you post and people write back that your bikes paint does not match the powdercoating or like you are having a clutch issue and they are like, "is your battery charged?"

Get off the line and let the adults talk!

Most people here are amazing mechanics. These bikes are old you have to know stuff. shops do not even want to deal really. Their mechanics can just read from a manual.
I hate when I go in to the local shop to get something and they are like what is the year of your bike? I just want what I said I wanted

drunk MsHap is a talker. I just opened a bottle of wine so I give myself about a glass before I am just scrolling letters across the post. :)

I've put the part number system in its own thread.
http://www.exupworldwide.com/forum/view ... 66682079dc

I've also included a bit about the generic parts (bolts, screws, o-rings,
washers etc) that I found on the net, that supposedly explains how that
part system works.

That is cool, so you guys get to ride together?

There are 2 guys on here from Massachusetts. I met one guy but I am super shy or whatever so we did not even talk. lol

I broke up with this guy like over a year ago and I lost all my riding buddies :( The old "Bros before Hoes"

Well they lost their mechanic. and the shops around here suck so that probably sucks bad.
