Headlight bulb replacement

Post by RUChris »

What bulbs can I replace my headlight bulbs with. At the moment I have 12v 55/40w weird looking things in there. Can I replace these with a standard H4 12v 60/55w Halogen bulb, or will it damage the lense or wiring. Or maybe they will not even fit at all. Many thanks to any answers given.
Cheers,
Chris.

Chuck, does using a larger bulb cause any problems with the charging system? Do you need to fit relays to an 89 FZR 1000 or are they already there?

ha ha, I put these wanna-be xenon "hid" lights in...H4 with 55/60w...also put 'em in girlfriends car (looks pretty cool I think). I would say that they are noticeably brighter as well... I chose this brand on lights because their Kelvin temp was 7000K (K means color range, NOT heat...meaning more blueish/white instead of typical bulbs @ 3000k is yellow...most other xenon bulbs @ 5000k). Check out that brands website for pictures contrasting their bulbs to standard.

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ...

headlight

Post by creed12r »

The headlight bulbs that you have in you're bike are not interchangeable with H4 bulbs and in the time that I've had my bike I havent found any that are interchangeable which is a real bummer because I've had about 5 bulbs go before I changed the headlight assy and yamaha charge about £23 each for them.
If you really cant get on with the 1992 twin 55/40w projector beam setup in the 1992 the headlight assy on the 1990/1991 had a single bulb but was the same physical shape as you'rs and I believe that these headlights take a standard H4 bulb, if you can source one of these headlights you can fit a myriad of different H4 alternatives to fit into it.
hope this helps
chris

I don't recommend a simple replacing of 35W bulbs with 55 or 60W units, unless your looking for trouble. The wiring system was not set up to endure the constant higher amp draw. Your best bet is to use relays as mentioned in this thread, so that your harness doesn't have a melt down at a connector or crimp junction.

I use to have 80/100's in my FZ750. People were adjusting the mirrors at high noon when I pulled up behind them.

Tim

Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers

Again, some experience from the FJ1200 world. On those bikes the stock Yamaha wiring to the headlight is weak even for stock bulbs (I'll bet the FZR wiring is no better - thus the low-wattage bulbs stock). Doing the relay mod will increase the voltage at the bulb - and increase the brightness of even the stock wattage bulb. Guys on the list have measured as little as 8.5 volts at the bulb with the stock wiring. Adding the relay got them to full system voltage - 12.5 volts plus.

Chris

okay so I'm dumb.

I am familar with the old common bosch relay that was so common on the Ford lineup for things like fuel pumps etc.

Can you tell me what part# to what relay? I'm sure the relay you refer to is just over the counter type stuff but if it's oem for something any part # would help. And then I assume it's a simple swap or do I need to run an extra hot 10 gauage or less to the relay?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >jjs777 at: 5/26/04 9:56 pm

JJS,
I'm even dumber about this stuff...can you be more explicit on what new relay to get? (and the 55/60W on my 94 haven't had any problems...but brighter is better...)

Nathan

Headlight Bulbs

Post by MyYammiBeetch »

Try this British spares company if you're desperate, they do a specific FZR headlamp bulb which indicates that there is somink weird about them. "www.thefa ... "I streetfightered my exup and put a 7" single headlight on, I've tried loads of different wattage bulbs and found some police H4 100/110 watt mothers but I found that they didn't seem to burn brightly enough a sort of crappy yellow. I now use a 50/55 watt xenon bulb and it not only burns really bright it has lasted longer than any other on our potholed West Yorkshire roads. I hope you find this illuminating.

and just to seem honest the xenon bulbs wont be as blue as the new bimmers etc....but you should be able to see the xenon bulb diff. coming at you on the road....
