YZF750/FZR1000 Engine Component Interchange

Post by desmo69 »

Guys,
1st post on the forum....

I'd like to stick a YZF750 head atop an FZR1000 engine. I have my reasons, one of which is the ease of mounting the engine into a YZF750 frame (have a frame to do this on). I've always wanted to build a YZF750/FZR1000 hybrid since I saw the Attack bike...

Can any of you speak to this though? I believe that the stud spacing is appropriate, and obviously the cams interchange. Other than that I'm not so sure.

Also what is involved in converting from an air-oil cooler setup to a water-oil cooler setup? Not sure if I'm going to do it or not, just considering it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yes I would like to know how this gets on. Someone on the site was kind enough to measure the distance between the bores that I think indicated that it should line up (since lost info) (I was thinking of putting the 100 barrel on the 750 bottom end & the 750 head atop that). I have a 750 head at home & access to a 1000 barrel but I have to strip the 1000 to get it & have no spare time yet.

But someone has since suggested that the studs wouldn’t line up front to back, though he wasn’t dead sure either. People will probably spobble on that the ports & valves will be too small etc etc but the 1000 ports are huge (as are the 750) so any reduction in size there is probably a very good thing.

A local independant mechanic let me have a peak inside an FZR1000 with YZF750 head last spring. He said he had to modify the combustion chambers to clear the piston crowns. According to him, the FZR1000 combustion chamber is "flat" where as the YZF750 combustion chamber is more "tent" shaped from left to right. He said the 1000 pistons would contact the head in those two areas. An alternative - he said you could use big-bore YZF750 pistons. I don't think he'll have the motor apart anymore (not too sure he'll even e in business) - but I can call and ask and try to get some pics.

The debate I've heard on using the YZF750 head on the FZR1000. 1) A very good head with excellent flow - D-port exhausts being very good. 2) Not a good head - doesn't flow enough for a 1000 engine and it shrouds the valves. This last advice came from Tony Tice - his website is www.ticeman.com - Check out the 164HP FZ750 running a stroked FZ1000 engine.

Bottom line - no answers - just issues and rumors I've collected while looking into this too....

As I recall the sump is different between the two along with of course the oil adapter that goes with the water/oil cooler version.
-John

If you do bolt a 750 head to a 1000 engine the bolt holes for the frame mounting will not line up. The 1000 engine has a longer stroke, taller barrels and longer studs in the cases to bolt it all together.
It would be easier to use a 1000 head and make up a mounting bracket in my opinion.

Mark
