Electrical Help Needed
Electrical Help Needed
My restoration of an 85 FZ750 has hit a snafu. I got the bike as an insurance write-off, so it had no ignition switch.

The bike will start if I jump the starter relay. I put in a new ignition switch (stock 3 wire) and the lights come on when the switch is in the on or off position. I have to disconnect the battery to keep the lights off.

Any hints where to look to fix this?

Re: Electrical Help Needed
Is that a stock OEM switch for the correct year ?
I just checked bikebandit and they have one for $93 or so
I just wasn't sure if you were trying to make something work, or you had the correct switch
<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Electrical Help Needed
Had some what of the same problem with my 86 FZ750. Check the harness plug that the switch plugs into. Mine had a bad connection that caused enough heat to melt the plastic plug enough to cause a short in it between a couple of the wires keeping the lights on. Replaced the plug with some fully insulated crimps and all was good agian.

The same thing happened to my buds 90 FZR 1000 when he had his. So I have made it a habit to check all of the plugs any time the bike is stripped down.
Jim

95 FZR1000

May sound weird, but check the turn signal relay. The older FZs and FZRs had the same set up where the turn signal wiring was ran into a relay that tied into other components. Can't remember what all tied into, but if the relay isn't hooked up the bike won't start.
Nate - 87 FZR1000

Have you seen my fairing?

Re: Electrical Help Needed
Found the problem, the side stand switch was grounding to the frame. I cleaned up the connector and the bike powers on/off properly with the key switch.

The bike now turns over but no spark and the fuel pump won't switch on. I hooked up a 12v supply to the pump and it works. I checked the clutch/side stand switches and they work ok

It seems there's no power to the fuel pump or stater relay.
That will be tomorrows project - solve the no spark problem

Re: Electrical Help Needed
Since you had a grounding issue, check all of your fuses.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Director of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
1994 FZR 1000

Re: Electrical Help Needed
I did find a fuse with a hairline crack. Replaced it and now I have spark! The spark plugs keep flooding so I plan to clean the carbs since they've been sitting for quite some time.
