I just bought a 1992 FZR 600 about 2 months ago. It is in exceptional condition (4900 original miles). Through my own ignorance, I ran out gas - twice. Insert laughter here. Now, obviously the bike does not have a gas gauge and my last bike, an Enfield, had a switch to switch over to reserve. I just noticed a "fuel" switch just behiind the choke lever. Is there a reserve position? Where is it? Is there an "off" position? If so, should it be in this position when the bike is not being ridden for a while? The bike didn't come with an instruction manual (I have a post in the classified section, looking for one), otherwise I wouldn't waste your time with such a stupid question. Thanx. John

Well, My 95 1000 has an electric switch on the left lower that switches to reserve. The petcock is under the tank and has an on/off position I never bother to put it in off andmine was down for about a year I use the trip meter to gage mileage set to zero every time you get gas asn when you get to 120, start looking Jim

I just find that any bike without a fuel guage needs to be ridden on the main tank until it sputters then flick over to reserve and find a servo (gas station). Like Jim says, set the odometer to "0" and you'll eventually get an idea of your bikes fuel range and when it's nearing reserve (This is a particually usefull bit of knowledge to have on your bike if planning any long trips<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT=";)"> ) [Repeat after me] "I don't know what I've been told..." That should be your switch. On my bike there are 3 settings, main, off and reserve. Like Clint said once you start feeling that sputter reach down and switch it over. Most of the time when I have to switch over it's doing 65 down the bypass, but once you get the "feel" for where it's at it's a sinch to do it while riding. Welcome to the 'hood John. Thanx for all your help, guys. Lately I have been doing what disgracer suggested: watching my mileage, but I'd still like to know what position reserve and/or off is in. It's one of those things, you know, I'd just like to know what everything on this bike does. Thanx. John.

Eh...disgracer fits him better...lol. John, does your switch not have it named which is which? On mine, switched down is for main, sideways is off, and up is the reserve. Mine being a 87 I don't know how much difference there is between our years, but I would think it should be the same. wow you all just confused the heck out of me. dragracer's comment would have sufficed but then things got strange On fzr1000's 89-95 there are only two things that change fuel flow. One is the electric switch on the cowl above the air duct on the left hand side. That switch alters the servo inside the fuel tank. As some of you said - this is the thing to change from 'tank setting' to reserve once you get the first sign of sputter. The only other fuel flow thingy is the petcock UNDER the tank which is out of reach in normal riding. This is not the same device as other bikes have. The fzr only has OFF/ON setting. Other bikes have a dial that is under the tank, but the dial reaches out and is the ONLY means of OFF/MAIN/RESERVE settings. Your fuel tap should be set to being pushed foward for on, and press the switch so it goes down towards the choke lever for reserve. Watch out if your bike will not switch to reserve. This means that the fuel sensor in the petrol tank has died, and you will need to renew this item as it tells your fuel pump when to turn back on. No one long pipe, one short pipe reserve taps on these bikes. Hope this helps,as this comes from personnal experience of pushing 500lbs of Exup, in hot weather for about 1.5miles, when mine ran out of petrol for the first time. At least the dealer was kind enough to fix said probelm for free. Cheers, Chris.
