valves
Re: valves
Jim,

Thanks for looking up bikebandit.com for their part numbers. I too had been looking at part numbers (parts.yamaha-motor.com) trying to verify if the valve pads across FZRs are the same.

'87 and '88 FZR750s and FZR1000s have valve pad numbers starting with 1AA-12168-xx-xx.

'89 and later FZR1000s and other bikes ( YZ250F, WR250F, FZR400, FZR600, YZF600, YZF-R6, YZF750, FZ1, GTS1000, YZF1000, YZF-R1) have the same valve pad numbers starting with 1HX-12168-xx-xx.

I just have this feeling that the valve pads across '87-'88 FZRs and '89-later FZRs are the same. However, I was hoping members of this community who have had the chance and experience to tinker around with '87-'88 FZRs and '89-later FZRs would be able to confirm about the valve pad. I wanted to lessen the risk of ordering the wrong part.

Anyway, I'm ordering 1HX-12168-xx-xx pads that I need. I'm crossing my fingers they're the same as the ones used on '87-'88 FZRs.

I'll let this community know what I find out...

-----------------------------------------------------

Mark,

Thank you for the suggestion. I also had that in mind. If all else fails in my attempt to acquire the valve pads, surface grinding by a local reputable machine/engineering shop is my last option.

I still need spare valve pads just in case the local reputable machine/engineering shop makes some mistake grinding (Murphy's Law).

-----------------------------------------------------

<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Re: valves
I may want to warn you about grinding valve shims.....
Many of them are not made of tool steel and heat treated, but are only case hardened and if you gring the hard portion away you will eat valves and lifters.
And you will do it very quickly
Now this all depends on just how much you grind, but it also depends on just how thick the case was on that particular shim. case hardening is not an exact science in the respect of how well you can control the thickness of the case. That depends upon material, part dimensions and about 15 other factors. So... You MAY be able to get away with it, but not in MY engine!!!
Find a source for the correct parts and have them shipped!
Just thought you'd like to know that
Jim
