I posted a while back about a noise coming from one of my engines that has me beat. I have recorded it as I didn't explain it very well.

The only way I could figure out how to post it was to make a movie and stick the sound file in it. If you click on the pic below it should play a movie on photobucket. The sound kicks in at around 8 seconds.

Was the noise the chirping or the studdering? It could be that I'm deaf too.

Sounds like the starter motor is not disengaging? or continuing to run? Starter clutch not clutching?

The whining. Most noticable towards the end when the revs die down

You could take it out and bump start it. The noise might be in the starter alternator drive train though.

Definetly sounds like the Starter motor to me. As Spook says take it out and bump start it, that way you will know if it is or isn't that. I am thinking about taking it all out on my trackbike, Hyvo Chain, Alternator , Starter , Sprague clutch etc. The bike starts easy enough by bumping and I should only have to restart in a track session if I have fallen off one other thing is if you are not using the starter you can run a much smaller and lighter battery.

Um, if I remember correctly, taking the starter motor out will result in the starter clutch dropping down into the crank case - and a full motor strip to get everything back in the right place again...could be wrong but it does ring some warning bells

Another thought, can you take the end off the starter and observe if it's still rotating, or maybe the ol' screw driver against the ear trick?

Thanks guys. Last time I had a crack a this I removed alternator and changed starter and water pump. I just have the engine bolted into a spare frame at the moment so bump starting would require some work.

I'll have another tinker with it tonight.

'sDifficult to tell with the sound recording not being so good, but I would suspect a stuck starter motor as well. I've seen this been fixed before by simply pulling out a sticky starter button; not sure what you've got going there if you've just got a motor in a frame. If you've just got something rigged up temporarily to test motor function, make sure your starter switch is a momentary switch right? Not to insult at all, sometimes we don't think about the little details when we're workin' on the bigger ones is all.

If it's not the starter, I'd be looking at your internal chains and their guides next.

You say "one of your engines" but is it the Honda or FZR1000 or what?
You can take the FZR1000 starter out with no issues but I'm not sure if
you can run it like that with just a plate over the hole, or if you need to
make sure the plate holds everything in place.

Yes I too have simply just yanked my starter before with no issue, starter clutch, well now, that's a different story and would indeed drop shit in the cases and ..... yuh.

Thanks guys. It is a 6 speed 1040 engine made up of various bits. I think the bottom end is FZR. (Different to all of my YZF engines)

I have had a few people look at it now and the general agreement is a bearing low down in bottom centre of engine. Maybe starter clutch.

Going to bite the bullet and split the cases today to see what I can see

Pull it all out when you have it in pieces the kit manual outlines block off procedures etc. If you need a copy drop me an email... Have fun!

IF it wasn't the starter I would bet chain guides, look for some cracks in them and make sure they are all 100%
