throttle

Hi, may i ask:

have you got some movement in your wrist?
-if so it might be possible to convert it so that a smaller twistgrip movement has a much greater movement at the carb's butterfly valves. there are a couple of ways this could be done.

also:
Could you use a left-handed twist grip? Didnt cops in the USA have this fitted to some of their bikes so they could shoot with their right hand still? (ok tell me if I am talking crap! )

Finally: if these ideas are no use, would something like the thumb operated brake lever (like Mick Doohan used) be of any use? i.e. make it operate the throttle instead.

Ade

throttle adaption

hi ade
thanks for replying. and yes i do have some movement, probably about half what i should, ive mostly lost this upwards ie the position of full throttle.
but i am particulaly interested in your first idea.
is is fairly simple, or is it a complicated mass of pulleys.

the left handed twistgrip, i have thought of it before but i don't know how to get over, A, the switch gear being upside down. and B, the movement it self being the wrong way round. i take it there must be a proper manufactured unit, but unfortunately im in the uk,(just to get a baseball cap sent over was going to cost 90 dollars)

also the thumb lever might be good too, although my thumb also suffered in the crash. it would have to be really light to push.

any advice on how to go about preferably the cheapest option would be greatly appreciated.

throttle adaption

If you wanted to try the first one, well its possible to get motocross twist grips that are for different ratios, (quarter or third turn I think). Also I seem to remember my RGV250 had a wierd link box with a pulley so that the throttle cable not only actuated the 2 carbs, but also did the oil pump and the some sort of link to the ignition black box.

This made me think that it must be possible to get an engineering company to make up a little geared pulley system that converts each 1mm of throttle cable pulled by the twist grip into a 2mm (or whatever you wanted) movement in another cable which could then be used to control your carbs.

This would have the disadvantage that gearing it like this would require twice as much effort from your wrist to get the carbs fulley open.

As for the left handed twistgrip, again the metal "case" part would ideally be milled from aluminium and would ideally be narrow enough to allow you to retain the LHS switchgear. This could then be (hopefully) swapped onto your next bike in the future if you wanted.

A good engineering company who specialise in one off bike machining should be able to manufacture this without too much hassle.

People like Spondon or Metmachex (Derby) or NWS or Desperate Dans (?) should be able to help.

Whereabouts in the uk are you?

conversions

Pick up a few of the UK custom bike mags (backstreet heroes, 109% biker etc) and they have companies that advertise in the smalls that specialise in disabled conversions for bike trikes, they can pretty much adapt any vehicle to any disability so should almost have parts to do this off the shelf if a stock quick action throttle doesnt give you enough movement of the butterflys for your wrist movement.
The quick actions mentioned just consist of a larger drum where the cable sits, but it does make the throttle more sensitive to movements, I always run a quick action (1/4 turn) throttle because I like the lightning fast response, but I have binned the bike on one occasion when the back end got away from me in the wet and snatched my wrist a bit which jammed the throttle wfo. If you ride sanely it shouldnt be a issue though...
Thumb throttles were fitted to lawnmowers and a host of other things, but if you wanted a lever type, maybe a valve lifter from the likes of a xl250 or the like?
