Hi all Im new to the group and damn glad I found you guyz. Any how... I just bought an 88 FZR 1000 from a kid who couldnt get the bike to run, so I made and offer to take it off his hand for 500.00 and he took it. So I push it home and started to work on it... I changed the battery, oil, plugs and gas. Guess what it started up just fine. I rode the bike to the kids house to show him that it wasnt the CDI module like he told me. So now here comes the question? It makes a little ticking noise when Idling. what should I look at for starters... Oil level? Vaules? mind you it only does this at idling around 3 to 1 rpm's other than that it runs great.<br><br>thanks for the help. <p></p><i></i>

Hi chap,<br><br>my fzr1000 did make a bit of a ticking noise when idleing,<br>but this has gone away since i had the valve service done, the same with a fzr 600 i had, the clutches do make a bit of noise so does the fuel pump, my bike has a squeaky exup valve! sound like a mouse stuck up me zorst! <p></p><i></i>

I was thinking it might be the values. Yes a knocking sound at idiles.. what would a value job cost or can I tackle this on my own. I have a service manual.. and thanks guyz for the congrats. I love this bike already.. just bought new pirelles for it today. <p></p><i></i>

could also be the starter hyvo chain<br>not to worry if it(the chain) makes a little noise<br>Valve adjust is pretty easy too...but you have to trim a feeler gage to fit in the space between the cam journals<br>Jim <p></p><i></i>

Having the valves adjusted at a bike shop will run $250 - $300. It's all labor unless they find something wrong. Shims are not expensive.<br> Don <p></p><i></i>

You can get ticking from lighter weight oil in the FZR1000. Top end (valves) will be noiser with 10W oils in warm/hot weather. The knocking part I'm not too sure about. A lashing/splapping noise can be the cam chain tensioner. You said the bike is an 88 but did not mention the mileage. <br>Don <p></p><i></i>

The cam chain adjuster is automatic...<br>If your bike has a lot of miles on it , the cam chain and buffers (guides) could be worn an dmay need replacement. But by the time your cam chain goes away...you'll be using quite a bit of oil and would have to tear it down anyway<br>Cam chains are usually replaced as a matter of course when you do a top end overhaul<br>Jim <p></p><i></i>

I'm not going thur alot of oil, I hardly lose any at all. No leaks either <p></p><i></i>
