What bulbs can I replace my headlight bulbs with. At the moment I have 12v 55/40w weird looking things in there. Can I replace these with a standard H4 12v 60/55w Halogen bulb, or will it damage the lense or wiring. Or maybe they will not even fit at all. I replaced my bulbs with std H4s (the +30% type) & they worked fine.<br><br>On a different tangent, my YZF750 had 35W bulbs but I noted other markets used 55/60s & the base of the bulb was std fitment & it was all just hunky.<br> <p></p><i></i>

Chuck, does using a larger bulb cause any problems with the charging system? Do you need to fit relays to an 89 FZR 1000 or are they already there? <p></p><i></i>

ha ha, I put these wanna-be xenon "hid" lights in...H4 with 55/60w...also put 'em in girlfriends car (looks pretty cool I think). The headlight bulbs that you have in you're bike are not interchangeable with H4 bulbs and in the time that I've had my bike I havent found any that are interchangeable which is a real bummer because I've had about 5 bulbs go before I changed the headlight assy and yamaha charge about £23 each for them.<br> If you really cant get on with the 1992 twin 55/40w projector beam setup in the 1992 the headlight assy on the 1990/1991 had a single bulb but was the same physical shape as you'rs and I believe that these headlights take a standard H4 bulb, if you can source one of these headlights you can fit a myriad of different H4 alternatives to fit into it.<br> hope this helps<br> chris <p></p><i></i>

I don't recommend a simple replacing of 35W bulbs with 55 or 60W units, unless your looking for trouble. The wiring system was not set up to endure the constant higher amp draw. Your best bet is to use relays as mentioned in this thread, so that your harness doesn't have a melt down at a connector or crimp junction. <p></p><i></i>

I use to have 80/100's in my FZ750. Again, some experience from the FJ1200 world. On those bikes the stock Yamaha wiring to the headlight is weak even for stock bulbs (I'll bet the FZR wiring is no better - thus the low-wattage bulbs stock). Doing the relay mod will increase the voltage at the bulb - and increase the brightness of even the stock wattage bulb. Guys on the list have measured as little as 8.5 volts at the bulb with the stock wiring. Adding the relay got them to full system voltage - 12.5 volts plus. <br><br>Chris <p></p><i></i>

okay so I'm dumb.<br><br>I am familar with the old common bosch relay that was so common on the Ford lineup for things like fuel pumps etc.<br><br>Can you tell me what part# to what relay? I'm sure the relay you refer to is just over the counter type stuff but if it's oem for something any part # would help. Try this British spares company if you're desperate, they do a specific FZR headlamp bulb which indicates that there is somink weird about them. I now use a 50/55 watt xenon bulb and it not only burns really bright it has lasted longer than any other on our potholed West Yorkshire roads. and just to seem honest the xenon bulbs wont be as blue as the new bimmers etc....but you should be able to see the xenon bulb diff. coming at you on the road.... <p></p><i></i>
