94 FZR1000, Loss of HP When engine is warm

I just bought a 94 FZR 1000 in mint cond, with 17,000kms! It's awsome .. It starts great! runs great, till the engine seems to get warmed up. Then once in a while, more often than not. All of a sudden the HP drops by half all of a sudden! It sounds like it has something to do with the air intake or gas air mixture. The sound of the engine changes? Sounds like it's getting too much air? Could it have something to do with the EX-UP valve? Don't know this bike too well, just got it a month ago. Last owner said that he tried to chase it down, totally rebuilt the carbs back to stock, tried a computer off a parts bike, but couldn't seem to figure out what the problem was? I changed the plugs but that didn't help. Then i saw that valve? I've never heard of one of those and the way the engine sounds when it acts up like that i just thought that it might has something to do with that valve? And suggenstions?? Thanks. Sounds like the EXUP valve jamming shut or the servo not always working. The servo is under the left rear side panel, if you whip that off when the bike is warm you might be able to make it jam. With the ignition off you should be able to turn the servo by hand without any real effort. When the ignition is turned on it should return to a set position (which isn't that easy to check)

When the bike revs the servo should turn more and more as the revs rise and then return to a set position when the bike is idling. I reckon your problem is that for some reason it doesn't always turn. Good luck!

Ex-Valve

Thanks, that is a really good tip.. I'll give that a try. Cause that does sound like what is happening.

EX-Valve

If it does happen to be that the valve is sticking, is there a way to clean it, or do I just have to replace that part? Thanks

Check the cables as well. Too much/not enough free play or binding?

Tim
<img src="http://img69.photobucket.com/albums/v20 ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers

Do you mean take the valve out from the exaust and put moly grease on it? or you mean the motor that the cables come from? I'll be taking it apart probably tommorow, so i'll have more info on what is going on with it then, ie: if I can turn the servo or not, and if there is slack on the cables.

Be very careul with the bolts when you take the covers off the EXUP valve. The heated has probably seized them in place and weakened them. If you do a search for EXUP valve in FZR1000 or tech tips you should find a lot of info on the tips and pitfalls. If you're lucky the valve and bushes might just need a clean, otherwise you might have to replace the bushes (they're cheap) or the cables (they're not )

Just a note for our admin people, I reckon we need to set up a FAQ page for stuff like this. The same problems keep coming up over and over again and it looks like the search engine either doesn't get used/found or doesn't work effectively. What do you think?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... =tonup>Ton up at: 6/23/04 12:23 pm

Ok, that sounds like a plan, The cables look to be perfect, so that is good. I just wasn't sure about taking out the actual valve itself without knowing for sure that this is my problem?? But my problem seems to point to this, but I don't know enough about the EX valve? If the valve was sticking wouldn't it always run like @#%$? cause it runs great just till the engine warms up then it screws up, then stays like that for a while, but sometimes the power comes back and stays for a while?? I know it's weird But I really don't think that it's the carbs, cause it purrs like a kitten, and I don't think that the power would go in and out like it does just from a carb needing a cleaning, cause the guy that owned it before said it's been doing this for a while, it just been getting more often that this problem happens.

Could be that your coils are breaking down/not generating enough spark when they get hot from engine heat. Just a guess.

Tim
<img src="http://img69.photobucket.com/albums/v20 ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers

all right fellas...I thought my bike was having an exup prob as well so went down there to check valve--much more of a simple piece of machinery than I imagined. Found that taking off the kill switch sender (& fairing) was all that was necessary for easy access. Cables looked fine (maybe a little too much freeplay which I'll adjust later), but the valve/shaft spun back and forth just fine/smooth. You might've seen my Help!? thread in 89-95 litres, bike running like absolute crap, well here was the problem:

yup the fourth one was completely fouled. I just took out carbs for a good cleaning and replaced the emulsion tubes so hopefully takes care of the rich problem, if not pilot air screws next step b/c richness was down low and worse when warm. But man oh man does she screaam now!! fastest the fizzer has ever felt

Oh, and from the haynes overtheedge:
"If it sticks, remove the cover and lubricate the ends of the shaft and the bushings with moly....If that doesn't help, replace the valve."

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... ot>Nbot at: 6/25/04 9:17 am

Coils

Ya, don't think that it would be the coils cause the power does come back sometimes, and full power all of a sudden when your not expecting it!! Like felling that you have half HP in 1st gear and you just roll on it, then half way thru BAMMM! 100% !! Makes for some good excitment..lol and as for the plugs, I just changed those and the old ones looked just fine. So i think that it's looking more and more like it probably is the EX-Valve.. Well thx again for more info on this, it's really going to help me out when i put it apart.

If your still having the problem after checking thr exup valve you may be interested to know I had a similar problem, until i removed the airbox, wow the power was something else but I couldn't be that cruel to the motor so on with the checks. It turned out to be the inlet cam was off by one tooth, reset it and hey presto back to normal running 1000Exup

Power comes off/on.

Start the diagnosis simple. How fresh is the battery? Bring the whole bike down to any battery shop where they can put their test equipment on it. It's 12 volt same as a car and they check for dead battery cells, proper alternator function etc. If your power is on/off it could be not enough juice under load. Then charges. Then dies.
-John
