Rear axle seized --- HELP!

Post by Marcelo »

Hi, boyz... <img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Waving.gif ALT=":hi">
Really happy after getting a set of Metz Sportec M1 <img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... ananna.gif ALT=":bananna"> (couldn't help pushing my thumb nail on the rubber to "gauge" softness ).
OK, straight to the point: bike on rear stand, rear nut undone, etc... just as described in Yamaha and Haynes service manual. Oooooooops! Axle doesn't slip right out. Not even hammering it ooouch! <img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... oapbox.gif ALT=":soap">
I'm afraid it's a matter of inner rust, particularly in the caliper bracket (the arm where rear caliper is bolted) which the axle gets through. Should it rotate more or less freely after releasing it from the clamp bar, uh?
Any ideas?

Thanks.
Marcelo.

'97 Blue/Black Ace
'98 Gold/Black TDM

Mine was a little snug in there as well. You may "try" lifting up on the rear wheel as you lightly "tap" on the axle with a deadblow hammer. That is how I got mine out. I put a thin coating of wheelbearing grease on it before re-installing it.
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Has anyone seen my keys?
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000

as previously stated by 'dude' but also did you loosen the nuts that create the chain tension? That may be exerting force hence keeping the axle from slipping right out.

-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000

two good points
I have had axles not want to come out (swing arm pivots too) that I had to resort to a sledge hammer!!
Go get yourself a piece of brass rod to use as a drift, an duse that against the axle so as to NOT beat on the axle with the hammer
The idea is to transfer the hit to the axle and a deadblow just won't do that. I use a deadblow all the time to get my axle out but it ain't stuck. I also use moly grease on the axle when it goes back together
You won't be able to twist the axle as it has two flats on the head to capture it in the swingarm opposite the nut...
The brass drift and sledge has never failed to get one out though
Jim

Hey Marcelo, here's something you might try - If the service manual didn't say to loosen the caliper reaction rod bolts, you might try that, ( the rod that runs from the top of the rear brake caliper forward to the front of the swing arm ), You don't have to pull out the cotter pins, just loosen the bolts - both ends. Then maybe take that drift, and hit the axle in the install direction first, then try to tap it out. Don't forget to re-tighten the caliper rod bolts when it's back together.
(I approved this message)
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... vhjkdis at: 9/16/04 4:06 pm

if you are patient ,the use of penetrates prolong, deep creep etc.guaranteed to ease the removal of frozen fasteners first saturate .. tap with hammer both sides, put the nut back wards so you dont smash castle nut.next using long ass breaker bar with appropriate socket.loosen then tighten using a quick blows left then right..i have sprayed frozen fasteners for three days @every 30 to 45 min..andtap tap etc.. it WILL break loose you have to be patient!!! if you have a torch oxy acet ,, heating the axle up tap tap..is quicker...good luck!

Thanks for all your advices, mates!
Finally with the aid of a fellow mechanic, the rear shaft could be taken out of its oxide prison.
Several hard knocks with a sledge hammer softened by a piece of wood and a threaded extractor did the job a bit easier.
