Making oil...
Making oil...
Hey, I'm new here, but I got this link through another bike webpage ( dfwsportbike.com ) anyway, I've got a problem with my '94 FZR1000F. First of all this bike has only 2,200 miles on it. Yes, 2,200. Now, I had to park this thing due do a back injury for about 6 months. During this time, somehow while parked, this thing allowed almost 2 1/2 gallons of gas to leak through the carbs and into the head, by the pistons and into the crankcase. My question is (for those Yamaha techs or anyone with some knowledge) is this normal, let alone possible, or do I have an underlying problem that I'm not seeing.

Now this thing does not smoke, would run 150+mph prior to parking, there is no oil in the coolant, I have already changed the oil and filter, I'm just concerned about this happening again. While checking the bike myself, I found that the pump does shut off with the key and doesn't allow any fuel to leak past (that I can tell). How did this happen, like I said this bike only has 2,200 miles on it. I bought it in January and it only had 578 miles on it then. This was 2 weeks prior to hurting my back and I'm ready to ride. NEED HELP!!!

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >imod35 at: 9/30/04 10:26 pm

Re: Making oil...
Greetings imod, Welcome to the Brotherhood!!

Sounds like the floats in the carbs are stuck/gummed up. If this is the case, then it will continue to do this until fixed. If you are mechanically inclined, then cleaning the carbs should be a relatively easy job. Get a manual, take your time and do it right.

Try not to post your question in so many different forums. By asking a question in 1 or 2 forums is okay and beneficial, more than that it becomes cluttered and in consistent. Just trying to be helpful.
Tim
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
Insert Joke Here
Dir. of Entertainment Eddie & the Cruisers
'94 FZR 1000
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... Re: Making oil...
hey imod...

Since the fuel is no longer under pressure when the ignition is off...then I'm surprised that could have happened to the extent of 2.5 gallons or so? I suppose verifying that the fuel breather hose that runs down to the ground is not clogged might be worth checking. I have never heard of THAT much fuel leaking into the oil pan while parked. Is there a chance of sabotage ? seriously speaking
-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000

Re: Making oil...
Sounds like float needles to me. My '88 1000 did the same thing til I changed the float needles in the carbs! I lost like 1.5 gallons in 4 months time while I was rebuilding the bike. Lucky the float needles aren't too expensive(In my case).<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... iker_3.gif ALT=":riding">
I be ridin in the Cali Bay Area:'88 FZR1K'01 ZX-6R

Well, this was surprising to me to. As far as Mechanically inclined, luckily I am. Have been a car Mechanic since I was 16 now I'm 33. But, I have never seen this before. Usually, you are right the system should not allow this to happen, but it did. I have gone through the carbs, checked the float levels, the needles, the seats, the floats, cleaned it all out. I did find some gunk in one of the bowls, but man for that much fuel to leak past, I've gotta be missing something. BTW, I have been riding since 18, and this is first bike I have owned with an electric pump.

Someone, did suggest that even though the ignition is off, the system may still gravity bleed due to pressure of 5 gallons of gas above the carbs. Theoretically, this could be possible, but if this is a flaw in the design of the FZR man Yamaha needs to update their techs.

BTW, sorry about the multiple posts.

Re: Making oil...
imod35,
What you described (fuel leaking into the cylinders) is possible. Bikes with fuel pumps (like the FZR1000) have their fuel valve always open. The fuel pump may be off but under the right circumstances a vacuum may allow the fuel to drain into the cylinders. For this reason the fuel valve should always be closed (turned to off position) when storing the bike. My sons Yamaha R6 would not start after being trailed on a trip. Turns out the cylinders were full of fuel. Same situation as what you described. In his case the bike had some bouncing from being towed on a trailer but we have towed it before without having this happen. Dealer said if the right conditions occur to create the vaccum (pressure differential), and the fuel valve is open, it can allow the fuel to drain into the cylinders.
Don

Re: Making oil...
Thank you Don. Finally, a definite answer from someone who experienced the same problem and spoke to a tech about it. That is what I was looking for. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
