squeaky exup valve? is this ok or not?

Hi group ive a 1990 YamahaFZR1000exup with yes a genuine 21000 miles on it ive just had the major valve service done early and a full engine and exup valve service all done by a yamaha main dealer, 300 miles later there is a SQUEAK coming from the EXUP VALVE when it shuts a bit like a metal gate squeaking, the bike runs superb, the main dealer assures me that the valves often squeak and not to worry about it, can someone tell me is this normal, i have also started using normal unleaded instead of super unleaded could this have something to do with it? i have no doubt that it has been serviced correctly as the mechanic has a good reputation, just a squeak sounds strange to me! Graham, I have not experienced the EXUP squeaking. I would not think the fuel octane would make a difference to the EXUP valve. The valve is controlled from a servo motor and cables. Most of the comments on lower octane is that the bike runs better. I assume the dealer greased the EXUP bushings during the service ?? Don

I wouldn't think <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif ALT=":eek"> that the valve would get greased as the heat would cook the grease but I would think the cables could be dry and the ends of the valve could have some carbon and crap on them . I've never raken one appart but that may be the answer Jim

I've heard my R1 exup squeek when it moves, and I would think that this is normal. It operates in a hot zone and collects products of combustion. There really are no grease type lubricants that operate at that temperature, so they have to rely on oxide layers, dissimilar metals, carbide bushings, or ceramic anti-gall coatings. If you consider that we are talking about a very light componenent in a consumer product, I doubt they would spend too much on this. They probably use cast iron bushings and a stainless shaft to keep prevent metals with similar make up from welding to each other.

mine squeeked fetched it out, and it was bone dry. these valves can seez so i put high melting point grease on mine its been fine ever since. i think mine was close to seezing because it was a bitch to get out

mines just started to squeek ,pull up at the lights clutch in revs drop and it sounds like my kid swinging on the garden gate guna strip it ths weekend

I've heard from the mechanics at the dealer that it is best to just use some motor oil to lube the EXUP. Have down it with mine and had no problems, other than a little oil smoke at first.

mine too started to squeak, when motor is hot and I am near to stop doing a bit of throttle to gear down, it seem it squeak just in the first open-close part, I tried to remove the valve to put copper grease in the bushings, but it is stuck and i ended living with it for now, i do not want damage something....maybe to oil it from the inside of the exhaust will solve the problem, it only need to remove the canister.

Mr Haynes says: 13: Twist the shaft and check its movement. If it sticks, remove the cover and lubricate the ends of the shaft and the bushings with molybdenum disulfide grease (Moly). If that doesn't help, replace the valve. Nbot '94 Fizzer Litre

if your valve cap is stuck on the best way i found of separating it without cracking it to bits is to remove the bolts from the plates, then get a blade from a Stanley knife at the edge tap it between the plate and exhaust, working your way around, gradually tapping harder to send it deeper. it worked fine on mine. and mine was bad.

Yes it seem a good way to remove the exup block, will try on mine this during winter! some heat gun help will be usefull, and moly or copper grease on the bushings should stop the squeak! thx

well me exup valve still squeaks, ive tryed moly grease, copper slip, and me bike shop put aluminium grease on it (while i watched) 250 miles later it starts squeakin again, plenty of free movement so it must just be the stainless exup valve moving against slightly worn and shiney brass bushings, putting a SCORPION race can on helps hide the squeak and gives me something a bit nicer to listen to.

yes if the bushings or valve axle are worn....there is no other way than hide the squeak with a good loud exhaust sound!

If the EXUP needs grease, graphite will works best due to high temp, everything else will make it stick (besides of molybdenum disulphite). I have never greased my EXUP, and it works fine. The wire cabling on the other hand needs attention. Lube with motoroil frequently (due to high temp) will help from squeaking. And if the valve does sound like sticking, renew the cable. Lemmy

I've just gotten used to it over the last 5 years. They will all squeek a bit, but those that have tinked those bolts off in the hearder housing know the danger of messing with it too. CHUCK D.
