buying 92 fzr1000 - having steering issues

Post by zeeroller »

I am thinking about buying a completely stock 92 FZR1000. It has 30,000 miles. I took it for a ride and here are my issues with the bike:

1. Steering locks up when centered. When turning, I had to break through the centering lock to lean into the turn. It hesitates before it goes into the turn. The owner said that it has a removable pitted washer type system. Is that true or does the bike have some other problem?

2. When idling, it has a rattle noise somewhere by the headers. What could that be? The x up valve?

3. The power seems to be a little flat at 4-5000 RPM. Any ideas?

I really like the bike but I don't want to buy a bunch of problems. Any help with these questions and any other knowledge about this bike would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

1. Steering head berings are shot. I believe they are tapered bearings?
2. Yep, that's the EXUP rattling.
3. Emulsion tubes and needles need replacing and a good carb cleaning w/sync. Add to that, new fluids (brake, clutch, coolant, and oil) and new filters (air, oil and fuel).

Ask lots of questions of the current owner:
Ask if he has service records.
Ask if the valves have been adjusted recently or at least how long ago.
Ask if you can pull the clutch pack and look really good at the clutch basket for cracks, plates and disks for burn marks, warpage, and general wear and tear. Don't forget to check out the chain too.

Sorry for the long post, and Welcome to the Hood <img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... lcome3.gif ALT=":welcome">
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Top Speed = Mach 0.197 or so...
1994 FZR 1000<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...

Hey Zee welcome, and good questions!
30K is a lot on one of these bikes, that one is going to need some work.
If you get a good deal on it - it's not the worst project a guy could take on.
Careful though, buying that bike will stick you to this forum like glue.
There is plenty of pro's and con's about owning an Fizzer litre, but I think the consenses of this board is that we all would understand the part about you "really liking the bike".
(sure did sucker punch me once).
Ummmmm..........Yeah..........There you go.........
Genisx1ATyahooeyDotCommaMomma
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... upElvis at: 5/30/05 2:26 pm

zeeroller,
Congratulations on your FZR1000 purchase. Go through all the scheduled maintenance work on the bike. It's worth it and you will enjoy the bike more. It will perform and handle better, and will be more reliable and dependable.
Don
