Rev Limiter Problems (Dyna DRL300) on a YZF750

My Dyna DRL rev limiter arrived yesterday. I ordered it after continually over-reving the motor on track days.

The instructions and installation is pretty straight forward. Determine the ignition pulses per revolution, set the internal dip switched accordingly (1 off, 2 & 3 on), four wires--one to each of the four coil inputs, one wire to ground, red wire to switched 12V+.

I got it all solidly wired in, start the motor and heck, no tach! Then switch the limiter to the lowest setting (6K) and proceed to rev the piss out of the motor--it's not limiting anything! I reread the instructions and recheck for loose wires and solid/correct connections and everything looks fine.

Any thoughts? (Dragracer you there?)

Kontoboy

P.S. Track day on Sunday and I don't relish the idea of going there with no tach and no rev limiter.

Hey KB, recheck the schematic closely - do they show a ground symbol from the limiter box to ground also?
Even with a ground wire, the box may also need it's own chassis ground.
Genisx1AtYahooeyDotCommaMomma

The directions are pretty simple, maybe because of what they don't tell you. The wires from the rev limiter are suppose to go to the negative terminals on the coils. The schematics in the Haynes manual doesn't indicate the negative so I used my mulitmeter. One wire goes to ground--I used one of the coil mount bolts that screws into a tab on the frame. The other wire goes to a switched 12V source that I found with the multimeter and tapped into.

Here's a link to the directions:

www.dynaonline.com/english/instruct/DRL ...

I was thinking I had four pulses per rev (two being waste). Jim (DragRacer) says it's two/rev and I'm taking his word for it. I reset the meter for two (dip switches inside the box). It still didn't work so I pulled it for my track day--just didn't have time to get it working right.

Plus my tach was out! Actually it wasn't that bad. I short shifted all day. We were on the small track and I just focused on being smooth, body position, cornerspeed, etc.

I'll get back to it and reinstall and recheck all my wiring. If it still doesn't work I'll call Dyna and see what they say.

Kontoboy

P.S. Picked up a jet kit for the Mikuni's and I'm just wondering if I should leave well enough alone or be bold and enter the well of frustration in the hopes for a little better bottom end.

I finally got that Dyna DRL-300 rev limiter working. Last month after another failed install I contacted Dyna tech support to report the problems I was having. I had hooked it up per directions, and every other plausible variation of with no results. Dyna replied about a week later to say some bikes needed an add-on DRL-200 "Signal Conditioner." I wrote back asking how to get one, and another week goes by and they tell me they are sending one for free, thank-you. Two more weeks go by--no package. I email again and of course it shows up the next day.

It's just two wires into a small inline circuit and two wires back out. Basically you just hook it inline with the two wires going to the two coils. Unfortunately the wires are too short to reach from coil to coil, so plan on splicing, soldering and heat shrinking.

I hooked it up, fired it up, and whoopie, works like a champ! It does't kill the engine--it just misfires as it hits the target RPM. I tested it at 3K and 6k, and have it installed and set for 12K (for now).

Kontoboy

P.S. Dyna sent me a second signal conditioner in response to my second email. Anyone need one?

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... ontoBoy at: 8/15/05 5:19 am
