exup cabling & motor

Can someone just give me the heads up on which way round the exup cables go on my 94 YZF750? Is it top of the valve pulley to top of the motor pulley, so counter-clockwise movement of the motor produces clockwise movement of the valve?
And how might one test reverse movement of the motor? At the moment it's not doing its start-up routine, but I don't know what position it should start from or if it needs to be cabled up - it's not at the moment 'cos the valve's not rotating freely.
