'Runs out' with gas in tank

I haven't analysed this one properly yet, but I wondered if anyone else had come across anything like it:

A few times now my 93 YZF750 has behaved like it's running dry, but after only about 60-80 of the 100 or more town miles I usually get out of it before switching to reserve. Switching to reserve gets me to the gas station. Then when I fill it up I might only get about 10 litres in, given that it should take about 14. I figure either it thinks it really is running dry, or the pump's not up to shifting gas without much head of liquid above it. Generally it fills the bowls very quickly, though. I don't get any warning light, either before this happens or when I run dry at a more realistic mileage, though I think the light is working.

Any thoughts, or info on how the whole system works?

(Colonials please note my considerate avoidance of the word 'petrol')

either tank cap vent or the pump is in the process of packing it in...
