Repacking Yoshimura Exhaust

I need to repack my Yoshimura exhaust and the only packing material for Yoshimura is their packing pillow. I assume this material will work in any of their mufflers. The only distinction they make on their website is whether it's packing for a road system or off-road system. Mine is an older R&D stainless which looks like the current RS-3 stainless. Anyone have any experience with using this pillow in your older Yoshimura's?

I have a Yosh R&D on my 97 YZF750R. The bike was always real quiet. As quiet as the stock muffler. 2 weeks ago I pulled apart the Yosh to see if it needed to be repacked. About 3/4 of the packing was gone and most of the holes in the baffle were plugged up. Only where the packing was at was where the holes were still open. I removed all of the remaining packing and cleaned out all of the holes. I did not put packing back in it. The bike now sounds more like a race bike only quieter. It is still quieter than most other bikes I ride with. And it also runs better. I have a lot less bog or hesitation of the line now. And it seems to pull harder on top. At this point in time I am not going to repack the pipe.

Bob,
I have not pulled my Yosh R&D apart yet but by the sounds of it (loud) I don't think there is much packing remaining. The Yosh pillows are not available through the usual distributors (LockhartPhillips, Parts Unlimited, etc ...) Apparently you have to be a registered Yoshimura dealer to order the Yosh repacking pillows. I have not found any of the local shops that are registered (but I have not checked with all of them yet).
So my next question is if there is anything special about the Yoshimura packing material? The usual distributors have repacking material of fiberglass, steel wool, or ceramic wool. Were you able to determine which material was in your Yosh R&D exhaust ? If I can determine what type of packing material Yosh uses I can just order one of the generic brands of packing material.

Don,
Mine just looked like fiberglass packing. It looks the same as what was in my YZ250 dirt bike. I know my local shops all carry generic packing. I can't see where it would make a difference as long as it is fully packed.
A buddy of mine has a brand new Yosh on his Ninja 636 and it is a lot louder than mine. That is the main reason I didn't repack. Mine still ain't very loud.

How did you accomplish the pulling apart? I have removed the screws from the inlet end of the canister but it refuses to pull apart. There's no overlap (inlet is flush with the canister) so there's no leaverage spot for prying it apart or using a block & hammer. The slip-on exhaust pipe had a clamp and a pin that kept the pipe from slipping off until the pin was removed. Is there a secret to getting the inlet pipe to release from the canister?

That was the fun part. It took me and a buddy with a rubber hammer to get it apart. The lower part needs to come out. The end pipe can stay. You have to have one person pulling like crazy while the other taps on the pipe where it goes into the can. You have to hit the pipe back and forth to get it to move. It took about an hour to get it apart. Carbon had built up between the two parts which seems to act like cement.

Bob,
Thanks for the warning. I'll have to get a couple of guys to play tug-of-war on the ends while I give it the rubber mallet treatment. As it was I had to slot the hex head screws so I could use an impact screwdriver to get them removed. Good thing there were only four of them. Slotting the screws ruined them so I had to buy new ones.

I got lucky with my screws. They all came out easy.
Good luck!

Bob,
I got the exhaust apart. The old fiberglass was still intact but was filled with black soot. No steel wool or anything else ... just fiberglass.
The core is actually two cores (an inner core and an outercore). Got it all cleaned out and wrapped the core with FMF fiberglass (exhaust feels lighter without the old soot saturated fiberglass). Trick to getting it back together was making sure the fiberglass was the same thickness around the core. Otherwise the core is not correctly centered and aligned within the casing. Put it back together with new stainless steel screws (ACE Hardware had them - the bike shops only had the black alloy screws), polished it, and mounted it back onto the bike. Sounds real good. Nice crisp clear tone. And the bike starts better. Doesn't spit out black soot anymore on startup. Startup and idle are improved. I'll take it for a ride tomorrow and see if I can tell a difference at the higher RPMs
I can say this about the Yoshimura R&D - nice internal construction. The inner core is solid for a short distance at the inlet to prevent blow-out of the fiberglass. The combination inner/outer core is a nice design. The core ends fit nicely into the end caps and no high temp silicone is required to seal the end caps. Just take your time and make sure everything is aligned so that it fits together without forcing it. If you're having to force it, it's not aligned properly.

Don,
I'm glad you got it. Your pipe is different from mine. I only had a single core. Maybe that is why yours was so loud and mine isn't. I am actually looking at buying a D&D pipe for my bike. I wany my bike louder since I ride in a lot of traffic. I want people to know I am there. I found a nearly new one on eBay for next to nothing. I am bidding on it now.
