Chain/Sprocket Replacement

When I'm coming to a stop with the clutch pulled my chian make this horrible pullsating noise. It does this even with fairly loose tension. When I lift the rear wheel up and turn it, the chain switches between tight and loose. It does this at the same place in the chain so I figure it's just the chain. Does this sound right? I would like to just replace the chain if i can, but my Haynes manual says to replace the sprockets when you replace the chain. Is that valid/necessary? What chains do you recommend? What chains should I avoid? Thanks for any help.

:welcome Cool

It is highly recommended to replace the chain and sprockets as a set. The stock size (for a 94 FZR1000) is 17f/47r 532 Oring.

I'm currently running a 17/49 (steel) and a 530 RK Gold chain. Got it from an ebay company called sumofallparts.net. Several members have purchased from them. Some members have also gone with a 520 set as well.

Thanks for the welcome and for your info. This is great. I have a 93 FZR1000, and I just went out and counted 42 teeth on my rear. This explains why I hit 100mph at 5700rpm and it's hard to do wheelies. I got the bike used so this is how it's always been and I’m used to it. I'd like to try and keep this ratio. Hopefully the 42 won't be too hard to find. Does this mean that when I get a chain I need to get a smaller one?

wow... a 42 rear? That's one less than the YZF750.

Unless you are making high speed runs, have long comutes, or.... ummm... give me a sec...... never mind.... You aren't experiencing the goodness that the FZR has to offer....

Just my recommendation... get a 17 tooth front, a 42 & 47 tooth rear (in steel), and a middle to top end 530 o-ring chain. Install the 17/47 and ride it for a week. If you don't like it, swap out the 42 and sell the other one on ebay.

I managed to pickup a 16T front sprocket along with the 45T rear on Ebay. I then ran an Google search for 532 chain and came up with :

YAM FZR10000 532 CHAIN 87-95 avail size 42-52; Price for Rear Size 41-46
Part No.: 327-xx-SPS
PARTS411 Price: $68.27

Anyone know if this is a decent chain ? I have a RK X-ring chain currently installed with less than 3,k miles on it. Just don't want to trash a new pair of sprockets.

532 is the standard pitch chain and sprockets, many people have gone over to 530 pitch (just as strong, alot cheaper and lighter) ensure the sprockets that you have bought are the same pitch as the chain you are going to buy, as they will not work with each other.

Understood. I had checked them and they're both 532's. I don't really think I need to replace the chain given the low mileage but if this is a quality chain then it's cheap insurance. If it's junk then I'm probably just as well off.

By the way, anyone have any idea as to how many miles a steel rear sprocket is good for ? I've heard that aluminum is generally only good for about 10~15,k.

Here's a link to a side-by-side of the rear sprockets :

And the chain that I have currently installed :

I've decided to run them until they're worn out and then I'll get the 530 kit.
