Cleaning brake pistons...

It's time for some new HH pads and some of the pistons are quite a ways out and covered in hard cack.
Do I just push them all the way back in? Or must I clean off the cack first, and if so with what??
Logic tells me clean 'em first.
Experience tells me shops don't bother.
What should I do???

I usually clean the snot out of them using brake cleaner. Then puch them OUT... Clean the snot out if the caliper and piston. This will allow you to inspect the piston and bore for any signs of corrosion before reassembling the whole shootin match and goin for a ride.

Thanks Jim,
so I use brake cleaner! I was a bit worried about it eating the seals for breakfast, but I'll wash well before I push them back in anyway.
Thanks for the advice.

i do the same thing jim recommends, though i haven't pushed the pistons clean out of the bores.
jim, do you have to separate the caliper halves to remove the pistons on opposed piston calipers?

Shouldn't have to Hooli. Clamp a thin block of wood over one side of the calipers pistons and use an air hose to pop out the other side.
Wear safety glasses!!!!!! (and watch your fingers.)
