RACE REPORTS, PCRA WAKEFIELD FEB 2010

Post by ZoltanP »

I thought i'd start the ball rolling: for results totals, see natsoff's http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/resul ... .RRT.F12.M

seems wetty ruled the F95 roost, followed by james spence-yzf750 and murray clark-bikewreckzx750. followed by brett clark, stu lomax and steve butler...

I heard it rained, results showing some riders not riding in that event.

F95-F2 was won by rick kwow-yam250, followed by mat hanna-600kwaka and steve green on his 600kwaka.

F89-newera F1 was won by nigel taylor on a fzr1000, floowed by brad lopaten and rob cole, both on suzis.
F2 results: CRAIG RALLS-Honda 250, then JASON BRETT-yam 600 and troy galvin, also on a 600 yam.

c'mon boys, let's hear the nitty gritty details!

Your quick off the mark!!

I was watching the times too, couple of things stood out:

Paul Grant Mitchell doing a 1.03 on his ZXR...
Steve Green, D grader on a ZX6 doing a 1.06...
Nigel taylor hasn't raced for 20 years and hadn't ridden the bike again before the meeting. Its a Superbike spec 87 FZR thou, raced at Bathurst etc he won new era F1 in every heat mainly doing 1.09's
Butler managed an impressive 1.10 on debut with the 750T on a track he hasn't ridden before

Rightyhoe this is how my weekend went down>>>

Got called up for 1st practice, out I went & the first thing I noticed was the track seemed to be going the wrong way. [very odd] But anyway I was starting to work the place out & came in a bit unshure of were I was placed in the big picture. 17th fastest with a 1.14 sec..

Went out in qualifing & stuck in on 21st with a 1.12.!! Everyone had lifted their game since practice, I thought not good!
Mid field carnage comming up.!!!!!

Race 1
Grided up & thought I may as well start from down the entry road into the track I was that far from the front.
Got a [so so] start & started picking guys off 1 by 1. Still not at all famililar
with the track & the bike, buit thats another story! Guys I use to beat are now beating me by a good margin. But anyway, I finished 13th with a fastest lap 1.11.7.

Race 2
Much the same as the first & I was not as tangled up with the first corner drama you get when you are starting from 21st.
Had a pretty uneventfull race still trying to find me way around & get ontop of the bike. A crash in the dying stages of the race caused a bit of drama, I saw the yellow flags come out & could see a rider down & dust around the next corner, so I eased off, & got passed under yellows!. After a call up by race control I explained what happend & it was decided it was a racing incenident & no further action was taken. Which put me from 13th to 15th finish. With a 1.10.2 getting better.

Race 3 WET!!!!!!! DNS
I was not going out in the wet, on slicks, on a track I hadent come to grips with & a bike I wasnt really a part of. So scratch that race.

Race 4
Starting to get a bit famililar with the joint, & had a pretty good race, Guys that I was dicing with were really good & had no problems at all.
Starting to find good passing points & using them! Worked on a few guys & picked tham off as I got to them.
Finished 10 outright, & 6th in class. Everyone seemed a little slower, I did a best time of 1.11.2..

So overall for the weekend, even with the DNS in the wet race I finished 6th outright in Pre Modern.. Came away reall happy, all good learning, I am happy with the GSXR. But really have to ride it well to extract the best out of it. The biggest diffenance is the braking, its much lighter & stops shorter.+++ But the down side is, it just hasnt got that HUGE mistake fixing GRUNT of the FZR--- But I think I can get ontop of that with somemore rider input. I was spoilt with the FZR & I havent got that now. I have to accually ride this bike.
So there you have it. Was it a better move going to the GSXR? Dont know. Both bikes have strenths & weekness's. At this stage I would lean 51% to 49% toward the FZR simply because it was a powerhouse that made it easy on me..

Next race Barry Sheene Festival of speed, easter sat & sunday. See ya there.

Well done Steve, I hope I can say I'm coming in from the other direction - having had to wring the 750's neck, it may have done my racing some good, so when I (finally) get on the thou, I'll be ahead (so to speak)....or at least have an easier time....you can probably see a bit more now how frustrating its been lately for me running with bikes that are quicker in a straight line!! That's the beauty of horsepower, it gets you ahead into clear air from the beginning, you don't need to fight your way past

Yep big HP in most cases covercome rider ability.[Im the perfect example of that] I always said that FZR made me look good!
I would say the gsxr would almost be a match for the FZR on the straights, but the FZR would just be a lot easier to get to the straights first.. I couldnt pass Stu Lomax on his YZF750 on the straight, were I could on the FZR. So it is a little slower power wise.
Im sure you will love the HP of the FZR...

Yeah its not stock, I shared a garage with him at the BSFoS last year, he was telling me about it, can't remember exactly what he'd had done, headwork was one thing I think, plus having had him come past me on the straight a few times, it's got some go! BTW, you were saying you looked at Richard Easton's bike at the 6-hour and looked like it had a Thunderace motor, it might have but Spook was telling me its a mod people do - putting a Thunderace block / top end on the 750 which takes it to 820 or 840 or something (also why Ivan did better times on it than his own YZF)

Yeah thats what me & Zol were thinking. Pretty common mod.
Ivan was cracking on that bike, I couldnt pass him. Good riding & a few more HP did the trick for him.

Hi Jason, Steve,
A good weekend at Wakefield, I'll give you a copy of the video of the races I followed you in Steve at the BSFOS or PM me with your address and I'll post it to you. You can see Mick Onrust crash in the distance just as I'm passing you on the back straight.
We should have some more good duels in the future as the speed of the GSXR was very close to my YZF.
Yeah my bike has head the head ported, it goes alright and was the only way to pass Jason as he is a demon in the bends and it was always entertaining to follow him riding the wheels off his VFR.
Richards bike is an 840 but he would be quick on a postie bike.

Put PCRA OP qualifying up Steve...! if only I could have replicated that time in the heats :hissy

Stuart, didn't know you were on this forum! Did I tell you I got an FZR1000? Should give me about 30bhp more than the VFR

Glad to be of service entertaining you, any onboard footage?? If you come to the Broadford Round I'll see you there, or I might make it to the One Hour aswell (ages away yet but gotta plan early!)

Good report Steve. I was following the timing over the weekend. For a while there it was quicker each and every session :)

Sounds like you are bonding with the gixxer a little :)
