MotoGP @ Catalunya

Highlights of the MotoGP at Catalan ...

- Rossi wins
- Hayden takes 2nd and keeps the points lead
- crash on 1st corner takes out 5 riders

The crash, which claimed a total of five riders, left Capirossi battered and bruised, Gibernau suffering concussion and a fractured left collarbone and Marco Melandri suffering concussion and a dislocated shoulder.

Gibernau kicked off the mayhem by riding into the back of team-mate Capirossi. The impact compressed his front brake, pitching the Ducati into a barrel role while Capirossi's stray Ducati took out Marco Melandri on the inside. The Italian hit the deck and was then collected by the Suzuki of John Hopkins and the Honda of Dani Pedrosa, who also crashed.

I recorded the race earlier today and just finished watching it. Pretty damn good for Rossi, especially considering he was in fifth after the restart, and had such a lead he was smoking his rear and waving to the crowd on the last lap. I don't think I've ever seen so few riders finish. Any idea how many went down after the restart?

Only 11 riders finished the race

Six riders went down in the Lap 1 first turn incident at the start; Marco Melandri, Dani Pedrosa, Loris Capirossi, Sete Gibernau, John Hopkins, and Randy de Puniet.

At the restart there were sixteen riders (including Pedrosa, Hopkins and Randy de Puniet ... but no Melandri, Capirossi, or Gibernau).

After the restart ...

Randy de Puniet crashed out on Lap 6
Casey Stoner then crashed out on Lap 8
On lap 11 Danny Pedrosa crashed out
Toni Elias crashed out
Shinya Nakano was black flagged

this is a horrible crash

I just caught a glimpse of it this a.m.

I hate seeing crashes like this....I want Rossi to win...but not at this cost

Loris has been doing so well...to have this happen

quite honestly I dont blame Sete...accidents happen and this was freakish

taking out many riders

Wow, thanks Don. The crash looked hairy live, but the stills really give the full effect.

Hi All,
is it me, or given his performance at Mugello, and he caused the
(above) Catalunia crash, is Gibernau not up to it, anymore.

The last couple of years, only Gibernau appeared to be able to
keep somewhere near Rossi. But not equal, or actually beat him.
There now seems a new crop of riders that can compete with
Rossi, the level has been raised. Gibernau does not look capable
of raising his level any further...
Just an observation, any thoughts...

yours Slip.

never been a fan of gibbers. watched him race the 500cc 'zook for a few years and do nothing with it, then got fast when they put him on a top bike, the honda. all the sudden he was this golden child of moto gp, the one to beat rossi.

he never had it. i think he might have been close, but i do believe he's cracked.

In the time that I've been watching (last few years) Sete hasn't really shown anything special. Don't get me wrong, he's been a good rider even to GP standards, but he's had such a long string of bad luck that I have to wonder how much he's fighting the demons in his own mind now.

There have definitely been some fresh faces added in recent years that are making things interesting, and not just in GP. Fans have been privy to some great racing in the AMA and WSBK too, with plenty of season left to see.
