hi guys, ive got a little problem + was hopeing for some guidence.
now i know this is a yzf site but my problem is xj 600 diversion related.
right, i have an old 1993 600 divy as a run around, the idle gear has about 4 teeth sheerd off so rather thanstrip the engine to fix it( scrapp it i hear you say!!!) i have another engine taken from a 1996 bike. now....
the engines appear identical apart from the 1993 is air cooled + the 1996 is oil cooled, (i dont have the oil cooler) so my question is can i just swap the rocker cover wich has an oil pipe going in, put a bolt in the side of the head( the air cooled bike is just got a bolt in the head + run the thing?
i cant see why not but hey, let me know your thoughts... cheers :help

It's not oil cooled, it's an oil cooler. That being the case, it should be fine, it looks like it was just an upgrade addition to the original bike. I would say just make sure blocking off the cooler lines doesn't restrict oil flow in any way, and ride it! Summer over in the UK isn't that extreme :)

So just to make things clear, are you asking if you can swap the 96 motor into the 93 frame, and just plug up the hole where the oil cooler lead goes too?

If so, I would really take the time to just find a cooler, don't think it would cost too much really. A guy probably could get away with running it without the cooler, I would think, but...... I guess the question is, if the engine had means of cooling, why would you run it without? Engines obvioulsy loose much when they're too hot so why wouldn't you want to keep it as cool as possible?

I don't know for sure about the Diversion but FZRs with an oil cooler run a second stage on the oil pump to feed oil through the cooler. If you just block it off you'll effectively stall the oil pump (or at least have it running on the bypass all the time) which will put a big load on all the drives.

Better to find an oil cooler or at least run a bypass line from outlet back to inlet.

Oil pumps are the same for the oil cooled and non. But the book shows a oil cooler adapter added to the filter, working in the same way as a YZF, but with external cooler.

I'm not sure what the bolt does in the head, but it is specific to the 97 oil cooler model. Comments?

cheers for the diagram, i see what you mean with the adapter on the filter, i will have to check that out but the engine has oil in it and is not leaking, you would think with the oil feed pipes from the cooler not attatched their would be some sighns of a leak. i may have to swap or remove the adapter.
fitting an oil cooler is not an option, this bike is just used as a run around it is most deff not my pride + joy.lol
oil coolers for divy.s are like rocking horse s*it here, ive only found 1 + he wants £100 for it + its used.

ok, ive found a zzr600 oil cooler at the back of a mates garage+ it looks a good fit, might have to use my imagination on mounting it but the plumbing looks the same, just 1 question tho. on the diversion( oil cooled version) their is a pipe comeing out of the rocker cover, is that a breather?
were does it go to?

Might be a similar thing to a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve? On autos they are generally located in the rocker cover.....

I wouldn't get too hung up on having the oil cooler. It's not that important.
