Other operating systems

Post by cvhjkdis »

Is anyone else here using Linux or other non-M/S operating systems? If so what distributions and versions have been the most successfull?
I'm using the Suse Pro distro with some success, but need to find out how to configure and tweak to my satisfaction.
The help forums arent real good on this version, ( you can read up on how to run 100 floppys in raid with data compression to be used as a server)

I just want to use mine as a home P/C with the usual multimedia features.
Anyone? Bueller?

Straight up Geek

I had Mandrake 8.1 as part of a dual boot. Took longer to load up than XP did. Took over a week to configure it to use my winmodem (on dialup at the time).

Gonna make this one a dual boot XP/Linux machine when I build the next one.
Rob

Thanx Rob, that is what I was looking for. I have asked around a little locally about different distro's, mandrake was mentioned, so was gentoo, (man they sure have a lot of weird names, I should talk). I did get one thumbs down vote on Suse recently, (on being user un-friendly), there just doesn't seem to be a lot of feedback, or a wide user base on it.
It has also been mentioned to me that maybe red hat fedora is the easiest for a begining user. I have a copy, and wondered if it would be worth trying to transfer what little I want to save.
I was running X/P as Tim mentioned, but it seems to have vanished in the latest upgrade attempt. ( reconfigured hardware for raid 0, and wiped the original hard drive during mirror imaging - oops).
Would like to hear more on this from whoever shares the interest. Bob.

Straight up Geek

I started checking into this a couple months ago, and learned that the proper term (supposedly) is not 'operating system' but kernel...just us MS dorks say OS, while kernel is the more correct term for what controls the interaction with the hardware besides BIOS etc....Besides that little kernel of info (hahahah), I've also heard that fedora is the best for someone like me that's used to windoze and wants user-friendliness.........So are you partioning or dual drives?
Nbot
'94 Fizzer Litre
Be alert ... the world needs more lerts ... :)

On the partition question Nbot, what I wanted to do was run windows from the raid hard drive array, and linux from another.
The new system is configured with three hard drives in the case. The hardware issues have been ad-nauseum in this set-up. I'll spare the details, but the quick description is that Linux doesn't want to play nice with the promise raid drivers for windows, which do have to be written to bios in dos. ( or so I'm led to believe). Since X/P was loaded on one of the raid drive(s) originally, when I got in a hurry and loaded Linux on the third drive, it apparently over-wrote the raid drivers in bios during the install. No MBR no O/S.
My attempts to recover the MBR probably wiped the drive. There's nothing on it now, and loading the windows drivers from linux is over my head.
I did read something interesting about kernals on the linux help forums under anti-virus protection.
I didn't know myself, but apparently all programs O/S or otherwise are based on a kernel, ( I think also called a shell ).
There where some interesting conclusions about all the M/S viri, and the reasons so many individuals are writing on the M/S kernel.
Worth a google search on a cold day.
I appreciate the feedback, I think for now I'll try to re-load X/P as primary EIDE, and see if i can get it to run as the primary O/S. It may cause me 'puter grief for a while, but hey, that's learn'in.

Straight up Geek

whats an OS ?

Post by jjs777 »

oh and I was a proponent of solaris x86...

then I though better of an OS that enforces killing your children and daemons lurking around and cute admins naming their hosts devnull

and remember ...if all else fails just su root and rm * /Rf -
but make sure you have a good backup of your data..and remember a restore is only as good as your backup

multimedia & unix ? sounds like mixing oil and water
-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >jjs777 at: 11/24/04 7:06 pm

No photoshop on that one. It's from popular mechanics as printed in 1954.
Funny how predictions can turn out, isn't it?
Straight up Geek

I think the laptop version was just a few hundred lbs less than the desktop model you have in that pic lol

Makes me recall a couple interesting things...as far as predictions go...

When I was doing one of my certs...We setup a network LAN over cable broadband using vintage WANG cablemodems circa 1981. Imagine WANG had that back in 1981? Most people/techs think cablebroadband is somewhat new. The storyline goes that one of the lesser supervisors at WANG squashed the product stating....no one will ever need that much bandwidth at their home.

Another one...

Back in the mid eighties...the notion that every home would have ISDN from the pstn - well looks like that never happened.

The next big movement I think will be fiber to the home. It's already in trial mode in some locales across the states. And the prediction (shiver!) is that it will be cost competitive with cablebroadband. trouble is...it will be owned by the telcos. And I have done my part to avoid the big telcos ala VOIP and cable.

And on broadband topic...I just recieved the new pricing from ATT Broadband for their residential ISP service...they are now offering a two tier pricing scheme based on bandwidth. Either the 3Mbps or the higher priced 4Mbps/384 dl. I recall 10 bucks more. My guess is that will not last long...unless they lower the 3Mbps bandwidth....as 1Mbps is not much difference. Increasing the upload to be more symetrical in bandwidth proportion would be the best option.

-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... >jjs777 at: 11/25/04 5:34 pm

Umm, John? It's taken a few days for my synapses to recover from the short circuit event that simultaneously occurred during my efforts to process all those acronyms. Even with the ample help of Google, I have to admit it would take some time for me to get my gray matter around the ideas your response intended to convey. ( Except for the part about the laptop ).
I gotta admit, I know nothing of WANG modems. Except that apparently the current versions work with CAT 5 cable.
What was really interesting is how many university computer departments employ someone named Wang, usually with a doctorate. I think they all do. After searching for a few minutes, I became convinced it must be a requirement of all high tech learning institutions to have a Dr. Wang on staff. LOL.
I may have to break down and register for community college computer course, if for no other reason than to be able to communicate in acronyms. There's just too darn many of them.
( And to study under the tutelage of the ubiquitous Dr. Wang).
Anyway, that was a good head check.
I now deem you the acronym champion.
(PS, my local Linux geek bud is equally convinced that we will all be going to server based terminals, so a home computer would be only a keyboard and monitor with a little memory, who knows?????).

Straight up Geek

What dealt me a great blow was when I started my Solaris Admin courses and the acronyms were similar to networking acronyms...which made a meeting with both unix folks and networking folks very entertaining
-John
95 FZR1000
90 FZR1000

My linux amigo says the same thing about servers, just laptops for us and screens too....wireless hopefully. Have you seen those LCD monitors that are wireless but also touch sensitive? windows remote desktop control

Post by jjs777 »

For anyone looking to control another pc....

www.realvnc.com

I've always used netmeeting desktop control but its bulky and has some bugs (loses cursor)

So vnc is nice lightweight FREE alternative.
