I think it would be fair to say that most car drivers have no comprehension of what a road bike is capable of, which is probably just as well, if the beurocrats had any idea they'd start restricting bikes.

We have a totaly unrestricted market on car imports, which means that most vehicles on the roads are cheap Japanese imports. This has meant that we've ended up with a huge number of young kids driving around in WRX's, STI's, EVO's etc etc. Plus we have the Aussie V8's which range in power these days from about 225kw (300hp) to 300kw (400hp)- these are the older mans toys. All of these people seem to think that they can blow away pretty much anything on the road- especially your crappy old bike. The look of shock and dismay they have as you rocket away is absolutely priceless, (I usually give them a wee look and a wave...) the way the bike accelerates seems to be beyond anything they thought possible.

Way back at the start of this there were mentions of wheelspin. I'm just wondering if my experience is pretty standard...on my FZR1000 WOT acceleration in first gear usually see's the front wheel on or near the ground untill the tacho passes about 8000rpm, at which point the front wheel suddenly and violently heads skyward. Not shutting or severly reducing the throttle (quickly) would, I'm sure, result in a flip. On my dyno chart, there is no sudden leap in the power curve, but this is about the point that it passes 100hp. Any body else find this?

Isn't 8,000 about where the EXUP Valve opens? That would account for the sudden rush of power. Or so I would think. I don't spend a lot of time in those rpm ranges at this time because I'm still learning the bike.

Tim

The exup would probably be fully opened around 8000, but it gradually starts to open as soon as you blip the throttle. After I re-jetted, modified the air box and switched cans on my Ace, I adjusted my exup to where it was slightly open with the throttle at true nuetral position. I kept adjusting and test riding, I could actually feel when it was in the best position, by pure power and throttle response.

If I hammer in first it starts to power wheelie at around 4000, and in second at about 7000.

Sportscar vs Bike

Post by TAce1 »

I tend to think, that these kids and their cars with the muffler cut off, have just simply watched too many damn movies!!! I can't help but think of a scene out of Fast and furious when the guys on the bike stop the car...guy on the bike said, see you at the strip, guy in the car replies, you'll need more than that crotch rocket....

Now see, these people actually believe that. I couldn't tell you how many times I have been sitting at a stop light and some kid in his hopped up Honda Accord has pulled aside and starts revving up. I always kind of give the " you can't be serious" look at him....and usually out run him with one wheel on the ground and the other one skyward, just to REALLY make the point.

What people fail to realize is, on a bike, especially a Literbike, our 60-120 times aren't far off from our 0-60 times. My 0-60mph is around 2.8, my 60-120mph is around 3.4, thats a 0-120mph time of 6.3 seconds. If a sports car can get 0-60mph in under 6 seconds most people find that Impressive.

My bike only runs a 10.2 in the quarter mile, but thats a 10.2 with a street tire, and me clutching the hell out of it off the line trying to keep the front tire on the ground. a good slick and a wheelie bar, where I could tach out at 5000 and dump the clutch...im guessing mid to low 9's.

On a good day at the local drag strip, there may be 20-30 cars running faster quarter mile times than my bike....but they all showed up on trailers, running the exhaust straight out of the header, with 15 inch wide racing slicks, giant hood scoops, tube frames, no interior, no altenator, electric water pump and fan...but know this, I have NEVER been at the track and seen anyone drive in off the street, with street tires and mufflers, and run a faster time than my bike...ever. and as I stated, thats with me having to clutch the hell out of it off the line. The thought of getting out run by a car on the interstate when my bake is already moving, is just rediculas. However, beleive you me, a few rich kids in their 50,000 dollar 2003 Vettes have tried it.

You watch too many movies kid...tell me if my tail light works!!!!

TAce1, That scene from Fast and Furious always make me laugh when I think of it too. The whole way thru the movie they're going on about having a 10 second car. Now I'm assuming thats in the 10 second bracket- anywhere from 10 to 10.99. I've only seen that movie once, but I do remember the 'Evil biker dude' had an R1. I just so happen to have an April 2002 Motorcyclist with me that lists an '01 R1 at 10.42. Now that's a stock machine, not something that's had $100,000 worth of parts fired into it. In the same mag they test a GSXR1000 against a Corvette Z206 at the track and the drag strip. The GSXR is faster everywhere on the track, including being substantially faster in the corners. At the strip the GSXR does a 9.87, the Vette did 12.81. The bike can get to 100mph and stop again before the car can get to 100mph. This test is a repeat of one they did in 1990 with an FZR1000 and the hottest Vette at the time. The car was faster in the corners back then, I wonder what modern rubber would do for the FZR if they tried the same test today? The FZR was still faster on the whole around the track. So we don't just hammer the cars in a straight line....

Oh well, long live the myth, that way we will always have cars to play with!

Back in about '91 I had an FZ400R, at the time it was worth $1500. One day this yuppie in his Audi Quattro Turbo got agro with me and tried to take me on. He cheated, leaving the line before the lights changed, but I did give him a freindly wave as I shot past. He was furious! At the time his car was worth over $100K locally, I just wish I could have told him..... That one kept me smiling for about a week!

About a year ago I was going for a cruise over a hill when I came up behind a Porshe 928. Of course he see's me in his rear view and tries to take me on. That one was a bit of an eye opener, I knew I'd have it all over him in a straight line, but I thought he'd get away in the corners. Nope. He was really pushing, I could hear his tyres squealing. For all his effort he was still going a bit slower than my crusing speed- and I'm only an average rider, nothing special at all.

Then on the weekend I get my ass kicked (going quickly on a very twisty road and staying around the 100kph limit) on my favorite road by a guy on a GSXR1000..... riding two up......oh the shame! Hopefully if I can get my rear shock woes sorted he'll have to ditch the passenger.... oh the shaaaaammeee!

Ton-Up, I remember that clip about the Vette and the FZR back in 90. The thing that I remember the most was the guy on the FZR passing the Vette in a right-hander and he was on the outside with his shoulder against the left mirror of the Vette. Man I wish I still had that magazine.

Tim

What's all this talk of this film 'The Daft & the Ludicrous'? I've never seen it, and never intend to, pile of poo. I see enough of the spotty face dickheads on the road, without watching a video with them in.

FZR vs Corvette? in '91 that would have been a C4, was it a ZR1 by any chance? Not a bad car, one of the few I wouldn't mind owning.

As for the idea of owning a Honda Integra with blue neons underneath and little blue neons on the washer jets....I'd rather shove live wasp's up my arse....

lmao, glad you liked it Simon....I like to buy t-shirt iron on printing paper and put the catchy bike phrases on T-Shirts. That way I can switch it up day to day when Im riding. Most of them I have just read somewhere, some I made up, I like double prints, most of my T-shirts say Yamaha Racing on the front, and a catch Phrase on the back. Among my favorite t-shirts are....

You watch too many movies Kid...tell me if my tail light works.

If you can read this... She must have fell off!!

If you can read this... There was a time when the 1% Harley riders were no-fooling felons with extensive jail time and criminal contacts. I laugh my ass off now to hear an uppity-snot nosed little rich boy on an expensive toy being labeled a 1%er because he has his nose stuck in the air! Or just another oser at a bar who wants to fight over a bike -- a real 1%er would've simply left you bleeding without too much fuss -- an no concern for "fair play"

I know I started this thread and you know what? It is really fun to see where the discussion goes. With that said; as some of you may have noticed, I'm getting in the habit of changing my signature quite regularly. I don't mean anything by it, other than to spark thought and/or entice humor. If you check out the group's website that I ride with, and read as much as you can stand, you might figure out part of why I am this way.

Tim

ps: I don't have the bike listed on the site any more, hence me being here and not annoying someone else on another forum.
For every Winner there are a dozen losers.
