The shorter the link the greater the lift in the rear and thus the faster the turn in...
Djalbin knows a LOT aabout this as he has done the testing

Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Nate,

The pros/cons depends on the desired effect ...
The shorter the link the higher the rear, and center, of the bike. This will shift the geometry/balance of the bike forward. Your inseam, weight, riding style, and tire profiles will determine if it's just right, too much, or not enough. Too much lift and your side kickstand may be too short and there may be too much bias on the front wheel.

Below is a repost from an earlier posting on this topic:

The dogbone length you want to measure is the distance from hole-center to hole-center. Standard distance is 6.5" or 165mm (at least it was on my 94 FZR1000). If you have a standard length dogbone the new length will depend on how much of a geometry change you want to make in the front-to-rear attitude of your bike. A shorter length dogbone will raise the rear suspension and shift the attitude (geometry) of the bike forward. The shorter dogbone will raise the rear and the center of your bike. It will also shift the balance point (weight bias) of your bike forward.
How much shorter the dogbone should be is the mystery question ... because the answer is "it depends".
It depends on the profile of your tires, your body size and weight, your inseam, and your riding style (i.e. where do you want the balance point to be on your bike).
Some of the popular lengths are 10mm shorter, 7mm, and 5mm. I think there are some who went with 2.5mm and I ended up with 3.5mm
We tried to calculate the effect of a 1mm change so we could construct a table that would show the forward bias and rear height change per 1mm, but it appears the change and effect is not linear. Best we could do was approximate. So it ended up with everyone experimenting with different lengths until they found one they liked. Some liked the length they choose with their first experiment and others didn't. I tried 10mm, 5mm, 2.5mm and finally 3.5mm to get my bike setup with a neutral balance point.

One approximation that seems to fit is the "2.5 factor".
Each 1mm difference in dogbone length appears to shift the balance point of the bike by 2.5". So 1mm shorter moves the balance point foward 2.5" and 1mm longer moves the balance point to the rear 2.5" It also appears that the aspect ratio (tire profile) difference has a 2.5 relationship. For example:
the original 94 FZR1000 tires were 130/60 (78mm) and 170/60 (102mm). The difference is 24mm. Now put modern 120/70 (84mm) and 180/55 (99mm) tires on the bike. This difference is 15mm. The difference between the two sets of tires is 9mm with the front now 6mm higher and the rear now 3mm lower. To return the bike back to its original attitude (a.k.a geometry, balance point) you divide the 9mm by 2.5 to get a 3.6mm shorter dogbone adjustment (shift the geometry forward).

I base this "2.5 factor" on the measurements I took with the different dogbone lengths I experimented with. The rear height variance did not appear to follow this linear progression.
Also the "2.5 factor" is an approximation. The actual circumference (profile) of a 120/70 tire from Dunlop may be different than a 120/70 from Michellin or Bridgestone or whomever.

Don

What's you're weight Djalbin? I'm 150 lbs., 5' 8". Am I right to go with the 162's? Jim, anyone help me out! I got 120/70 and 180/55 pilot powers soon! Soon, meaning, when I get the dogs!<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Pon,
162mm should do it for you. That's 3mm shorter than the stock 165mm. I ended up with 161.5mm (3.5mm shorter). My weight is 165-170 lbs, 5'8", 120/70, 180/55 Dunlop D208. Considering the weight difference, 3mm for you should be equivalent to 3.5mm for me. I tried 2.5mm and the balance point on the bike was not forward enough. 5mm was too far foward for me (I was trying to obtain a neutral front/rear bias).
The only thing I'm not sure of is the difference in tire circumference between the D208s and the Pilot Powers.

Don

Put my dog bones on Saturday and went out all day today to test 'em out. I like the way the bike now has a good neutral feeling to it. Turn in is a lot more smoother and clean. Now I just need to mount the Powers and I'll be good! Thanks Jim!<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... The length is the same (stock) as for an FZR (165mm = 6.5 inches or very close) 155mm links will raise the rear 2 inches and I can not imagine wanting to raise the bike 3" That would make the steering WAY to quick and twitchy. But I do have some 155mm links
Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
