Clutch assembly compatability between FZRs

Post by orionburn »

Basically looking at replacing the entire clutch assembly right now. Basket is shot, boss is worn pretty good and need new plates & springs (see the clutch trouble thread).

Bob (cvhjkdis) has got a set he's willing to part with. We wanted to check and make sure it would be a straight swap going from a 90s FZR to a 87. Looking at the parts fiche things look a lot alike. Does look like the basket stayed the same, but the boss changed somewhat along with the plates. Other than that everything looks the same.

So, questions are: Will the boss still fit ok on a 87? If so, go with the original plate set-up or with the plates from the later FZR?
Nate - 87 FZR1000

Have you seen my fairing?
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... ionburn at: 2/21/05 8:21 am

OK
After a little investigation...
the baskets are the same part number ( 87 and 91) I chose 91 just as an arbitrary year of the newer type
the pressure plate, nad hub (boss) are not the same number
and the bearing is the same number

My thinking is that the new clutch part numbers are an improvment on the earlier parts and that if you used the later parts as a set (hub and pressure plate) that you will be fine as the bearing is the same.

Unless Chuck D or Matt know otherwise?

All of those parts are available through bikebandit also
Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Yup

That's what Bob was thinking. Made some improvements but otherwise the same set up. Though the boss is different, we both figured it would be straight swap. Guess I could always be the guinea pig and find out for sure
Nate - 87 FZR1000

Have you seen my fairing?

Thanks, Matt. Maybe a shot of the boss if you can. I need to get pics of mine yet (may try to today if I get a chance). I'll have to take a pic of mine still attached since I haven't had a chance to pull it off yet. I'll see if I can get mine up today and we can compare the two.

Can't remember for sure, but Bob was saying the only difference may have been some extra holes drilled into the boss to aid in the chatter department. Or I could be talking out of my ass...who knows
Nate - 87 FZR1000

Have you seen my fairing?

Hiya Matt, I somehow knew you'd been into your clutch, but I hadn't seen the pics - so thanx for the link.

A quick word on the parts descriptions -
There are only three major castings in the clutch assembly - but probably a dozen different words for them -

The Basket/Gear assembly is pretty hard to mistake - that's the piece the fingers break off of.

The Boss/Hub assembly goes into the basket and indexes the internal clutch plate teeth - This is the piece that may be different between the Genesis and EXUP bikes.

And the pressure plate/clutch cover piece that the springs go into - this may also be different as it is keyed to, and must rotate with, the clutch Hub - weather the assembly is engaged or disengaged.

The one thing that has been verified so far is that the basket assembly is the same part# for pretty much all the Yami one Litre engines, but small differences such as trans input shaft length or Torrington bearing radial clearance may be different between the years, those are the questions I can't answer without a Genesis bike to look at.
I appreciate any response to this, But I think we are down to trying to fit the parts into the Genesis bike to find out.
Wish us luck!
Straight up Geek
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... vhjkdis at: 2/23/05 4:57 am

Well, let's get this ball rolling then, Bob. Honestly I think this is going to be a straight swap with no worries. Hit me up with a email with your paypal info and I'll get some funds sent your way.

I got some new gaskets on order for the crank cover & oil pan, so no rush since it's going to be a week or so before I get them in. Once I have everything I'll get this bugger put back together and see what happens!
Nate - 87 FZR1000

Have you seen my fairing?
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... ionburn at: 2/23/05 5:23 am

I THINK that even if you were a little long on the radial bearing that you could machine the inside of the hat (that's the pressure plate to you non dragracer types) to get the proper clearance
Has anyone figgured the clutch plate airgap for this bugger?
Jim<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
