Dynojet install on my YZF750--Surprises!

Post by KontoBoy »

Well, I had my Kit and all the parts, so in preparation for installing my Dynojet kit I went thru the forum yesterday.

Based on what I read I'm looking at:

Clean everything thoroughly
Replace emulsion tubes w Factory Pro
122 mains
3 notch from top on needle
14 mm float
2-1/2 out on idle mixture
Skip installing the main air jet correctors
Oh, and replace the Phillips Head with Hes socket cap screws to faclilitate on the bike tuning.

Does this sound right--I'm running a stock air box with K&N and full race Micron header and cannister (no exup). The motor is stock w. about 19K mi.

I was surprised to see no discernable taper on the Dynojet needles, and 55mm lenghts vs 60mm on the stock! Can that be right?

Then, all the jets in my kit are threaded, but my carbs use the push in jets!

I've got an email into Dyna, but at this point I'm ready to just replace the emulsion tubes and adjust the float and leave the rest alone. My original motivation was to get some better bottom end pull (under 9K).

Any thoughts or advice?

Kontoboy

Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... ontoBoy at: 8/17/05 7:28 pm

Yeah but your 1040 sucks (oo-er) like a 1040 rather than a 750 so jet comparison isn’t valid.

My 750 runs best on 138DJ jets, -but ignore that as it has flatslides.

More headaches

Post by KontoBoy »

Well the kit says it the '97 YZF and includes instructions for such--unless somebody just threw a bunch of parts in the box...?

Didn't hear from DynoJet today and was too busy to call. I decided just skip the needls and jets, just check/set the floats and replace the springs and emulsion tubes. Got to #3 when I went to reinstall the diaphragm I held it up to the light to check for leaks--damn--it has a hairline crack the upper edge, maybe a 1/2 inch.

Bikebandit wants $134 for a replacement! I'm not putting that money into these carbs with a set of FCRs on the shelf (not ready to go in though--need airbox adaptor and was going to do it this winter.)

Anyone have one to sell or suggestions for a makeshift repair? (Thin, flexible tape?)

Kontoboy

Would that be for the 97 yzf1000r ?
I know the carbs are the same size on the 750 as the 1000.
Mike

It's for a '97 YZF750. I did make some repair and reinstalled the carbs yesterday, and took it around the block (no registration). Other than a bit of hesitation coming off idle, it seems to run OK.

Kontoboy

Finally got a chance to talk with Dynojet support today--they still have not replied to last weeks email.

They said about mid '97 Yamaha switched from the threaded to the plug-in jets I have. They are sending me a free set of replacements--thank you.

They also said the 55mm blunt ended needles are correct. The stock needles are 60mm and taper to a sharp point. The Dynokit ones have little visible taper and end with a round tip.

Finally, it wasn't clear from the directions, but you use the drill bit in the kit to enlarge to two holes in the slide (on both sides of the needle).

Of course the carbs are back in the bike now so i don't know when I'll get a chance to work on it again. My lawnmower crapped out yesterday--carb problems. Now what main jet should I use on a Snapper running the stock airbox and header?

Kontoboy

dynojet

Well it's a good thing you have a spare set of carbs sitting on the shelf, my sister tried installing the same kit last summer to only find herseld drilling those plugs out, and trying to find a way to get the holes in the slides back to the proper size. I'm not sure if anyone has gotten the Dynojet kits to work, but it's definately a bad sign when they send you the wrong jets and try to feed you bullshit about the jets changing in 97 from threaded to pushin(I can say from visual experience 93, 94, and 95 were all pushin, I'm certain every other year was as well). I'm not sure what their radical thinking was on the part of the needle taper. If you can by any means get rid of that kit and buy a factory pro, if I was to d oit again I'd get the race kit(1.7 I think) just for the added feature of bring able to do more tuning inside the carbs.

Well, I paid $25 for the Dynojet kit, vs $180+ for Factory Pro. I'm sure the FP is worth the money but this winter I plan to put 39 mm Keihins and a ram air box on. I don't want to drop a lot of money into the Mikunis.

Got the bike to the track with partial carb upgrade--cleaned 'em, put in FP emulsion tubes and Dynojet diaphragm springs, reset the float level. A little crisper on the throttle, a little better bottom end, but not much. It did seem to use a lot more fuel but it could of been the from the long straights running wide open.

The replacement jets arrived, sort of. Dynojet sent me another set of threaded jets! Just got off the phone--they said they'd send another set today with 2 day delivery--thank you.

They didn't want the old ones back. Anyone need a set of threaded jets (118, 122, 126, 138, 140 as I recall) for a 38mm Mikuni?

Kontoboy

Dyno vs fact pro

I've found that the factory needles are a bit better in design. $180? that seems a bit high, where are you located?

As for hesitations, don't forget to leave your servo plugged in.

Chuck D.

Dynojet - Surprises

Post by KontoBoy »

Okay, finally got that DynoJet kit completely in.

First it came with the wrong jets--threaded instead of push in. Then Dynojet sent the wrong set of replacements (more threaded). Finally DynoJet sent the right push in jets, but no O-Rings to secure them. Bike Bandit supplied the O-Rings, $17 with shipping.

I did the 122 mains, Dynojet needles at 3rd notch, 2-12 turns out, only drilled out one of two holes on the slides, Factory Pro emulsion tubes. I left the air correctors alone. This is on a motor with a stock airbox, K&N and Micron full race (no Exup).

And surprisingly, it ran great! It is a little hard starting when cold (sounds like a cylinder may be missing). But after warmed up much quicker throttle response and pull under that dreaded 8-9K flat spot. (I'll probably drill out that second hole now).

I spent all day Sunday on the short VIR Patriot circuit--my first time there. By the middle of the morning found I was could get around quicker just keeping it in second for all but the end of two short straights. Before the rejetting I would of never considered it--there was just no decent pull at low RPMs.

I am huffed that it took 4 months to get the kit right to get it installed, but happy with the results. (I still plan on putting the FCRs on this winter.)
