Speedo failure
Somewhere around 2000 miles ago my speedo stopped functioning. I replaced the cable and no joy. I'm going to be checking out the drive gears but i was wondering, is this a common failure on the FZR/YZF bikes ? I had the drive gears on my FZR fail about 18 months ago and the resident parts man (Tim) had to send me one post haste. And these things (the speedo's) are purely mechanical, right ?
Re: Speedo failure
check the thingie(dont know the name) in youre frontwheel... they tend to wear or break and than it dousnt rotate the ring on your speedoring that is attached to youre wheel...silver wrote:Somewhere around 2000 miles ago my speedo stopped functioning. Yup. Drive gear in front wheel. If the tangs are broken or worn off....it won't turn the cable. Teh easy way to see is take the cable off the back of the spedo. hang it where you can see it andride around the block
If the inner is turning you got other problems. If not it's the drive gear in the front wheel

My speedo quit working (FZR1000) at approx 27K miles. Front wheel gear unit. $102.00 in new parts from Yamaha:
Gear Unit Assy = $84.07
Clutch = $5.75
Clutch Retainer = $4.45
Oil Seal = $8.55
The speedo is mechanical. The front wheel hub drive, the cable, and the speedometer. When mine quit working I disconnected the cable at the front wheel hub and spun the cable by hand. The speedometer gauge needle moved so I knew it was the front wheel gear assembly.

i did something similar to trouble shoot my broken speedo. i took the cable off of the drive gear at the wheel, put the spindle in the cable in the chuck of a drill and pulled the trigger. if the speedo doesn't register the speed it's either the cable or speedo itself. if it does it's the drive gear. unfortunately mine was the drive gear as well.dragracer1951 wrote:Yup. It did turn out to be the "clutch meter" widget with a bent/worn tang. Oddly I could connect a cable to it and it would spin the cable while I was holding it pretty tight so I thought it to be "good enough" but it seems that the speedometer needs more torque.

Well with #5 being only $4 and #11 being $66, I'd replace #5 and see if all's good. I mean you have to replace that for sure since is broke'd.
Me? I'd shoot some brake-keen in #11 to clean it up and then spray in some lithium grease to lube it and go from there (given that is already in fair order/moves freely).
4FM-25149-00-00 CLUTCH, METER $3.82
4FM-25190-00-00 GEAR UNIT ASSY $66.12

The #5 is only knackered by the person putting the wheel back on.haunter wrote:on bikes they are a little more....exposed to the elements and bumps etcsilver wrote:
