What's LEGAL?

Hi All,
Been awhile since posting because it's been awhile since I've had any problems. Now I need advice and this is the best place I can think of to turn.
25 yrs ago I used to ride my kids around on a CBX, Katana and a XT500 and never got stopped or any dirty looks. Now I've a grandson I want to ride around and somehow I don't think I could get away with it. Just got a front mount bicycle seat for 1 to 4 year olds and see I could mount it on my SV. Does anybody know what's legal and what not. I got him an approved Harley Helmet and his mom's permission (still working on grandma's) and will go for it as soon as I get 5 thumb's up.

Personally, if the kid can't touch the pegs, they don't ride...... and being that I have no rear pegs.... no one rides but me.

over here the rules are, must sit on passenger seat normally, be able to
reach handholds and footpegs, wear a helmet.

They were thinking of changing it to minimum 8yo though.

My buddy gives his daughter rides all the time but according to this state passagers must be able to touch foot pegs and be at least 5yrs old. If you are just riding around the block or something like that and you are not going to be going to fast i.e. 10-20mph that would be different unless a cop see's you. I do it with my daughters all the time but I don't leave the neighborhood.

Personally I wouldnt do it until the child coult hold on themselves and reach the pegs, just dangerous. But this is JMHO. Baybe modify a car seat and bolt it the the backseat?

As for legal regulations, well I think its probably illegal unless they can ride in the proper passenger position.

Sounds fair.

In the states I wonder if it's state or federal law that controls this stuff.

Yoni, the states set the rules in the US.

For example, in Wisconsin (a no helmet required state for adults), anyone UNDER 18 or on a learners permit (any age) must wear a helmet. No age restrictions.

In Illinois (also a no helmet required states) doesnt require helmets for ANYONE including children.

Ah, laws left over from the days of colonies...

Here in Australia the constitution declares the Federal Government to
have powers over national interests, such as international commerce
and defence, interstate commerce (but apparently not road transport
despite all the interstate travel). Different rules in different states.
Our half-assed fix is that we have only just recently got a Federal
body to recommend standardised road rules for the whole country,
but it is up to individual states to make it happen if they feel like it...

Spain's worse.

Only the national (interstate) roads are looked after by the national government. All local roads, the ones bikes like best, are looked after by individual local councils... so a great road can suddenly go tits up just because you crossed the town line.
On top of that, road management is one government department, and licences, tax, inspection and fines is another.
What a mess.

I ride my Daughter around... I live in GA...I have gone for rides as long as 1 to 2 hrs with her. She is 7 years old but has been riding since she has been 6. I have a DOT approved helmet and she reaches the foot pegs with no problems. I have strap that I wrap around my waist which makes a good handle for her to hold on to. I taught her how to ride and what to look out for. She leans and follows my helmet properly. I quests what I’m trying to say is I would rather her learn from me how to ride and all the proper techniques, rather than to get a ride from some foolish kid later on... this way she'll know wrong from right. I would suggest starting of slow and near the house. Teaching them way to ride is the best thing any responsible rider can do...
