Brake upgrade for '87 FZR1000
Brake upgrade for '87 FZR1000
Ok people,

I'm looking for advice for upgrading front calipers from my '87 FZR 1000.

My current calipers are sticking, so I planned an overhaul with new seals and dust boots. My local dealer informs me that they are $49 (Aus) a set, so I order 2 sets in order to do both calipers.
Go to pick them up today, and find that there are only 2 seals and dustboots in a set. Ie the 2 sets I ordered would only do 1 caliper.

We re-check the fiche, and find an error that says 1 kit required per caliper when it should be 2 (At this point I ask myself what were they thinking when a 4 piston caliper can be o'hauled with only 2 seals & dustboots)

Mr yamaha tells me they can get another 2 sets in ($196 total <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/mad.gif ALT=">:"> ), but I kindly tell him no thank you

So, if I'm going to spend $200, I may as well upgrade.

What will fit?

'89 FZR 1000 onwards 4 pot calipers?
'95 FZR 1000 6 pot caliper?
'96 onwards Thunderace/Thundercat/R1/R6 1 piece 4 pots?

What do you think will fit, and give the best performance?
What are some of you guys using?

BTW - I already have a 14mm master cylinder and braided lines.

Does a '95 have USD forks?
Will these calipers bolt up to 41mm conventionals?

Re: Brake upgrade for '87 FZR1000
there is a thread where I have pics of the conversion of my 95 with USD's , Tim's 94 with USD's, The centerline spacing is 100mm
I had to do some machining with a hand grinder to make them fit, They needed a little clearance to clear the forward piston
Not too difficult to figgure out
Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Should be a straight swap from what I remember. No mods required.
<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...
There are some who call me........Tim?
Top Speed = Mach 0.197 or so...
1994 FZR 1000 <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ...

Yea Tim...I think you're right. Only we who have the ultra cool USD forks have to have ours expertly machined by very cool and exclusive people.....

I think they bolt right on to them normal USU forks
<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... e_poke.gif ALT=":poke"> (up side up)<img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... e_poke.gif ALT=":poke">
Jim <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/ ... Re: Brake upgrade for '87 FZR1000
FZ911 - There was a post here from some time back about replacing caliper seals, I've looked through everything I could think of to find it, but it must be lost.
Anyway, one of the Euro guys found replacement caliper seals at a hydraulics equipment supply shop. They can be had in standard sizes.
It's risky, since it is a brake system and you wouldn't want to put in-compatible parts in, But seals were found for far less than Yamaha prices in that particular case.
I paid for a full set of new seals for my '92. It was a lot of $$ for what seemed like not very much.
If I was to do it again, I would certaintly try to find less expensive parts if I could.
Good luck, B.
Genisx1AtYahooeyDotCommaMomma
Edited by: <A HREF=http://p072.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhoo ... upElvis at: 9/1/05 7:41 am

Re: Brake upgrade for '87 FZR1000
Thanks everyone for your tips.

I looked through the old threads in the '87,'88 section, and found some answers to my question (should have done this first )

I did ring an auto brake specialist, and they assure me they will have seals that fit at about $6 each, but no rubber dust boots. I'll have to check out the condition of the pistons etc, then make my mind up as to upgrade, or re-seal....

Would be pretty cool to have monoblock blue spots on my Blue FZR though

You can get R1/R6 blue dots on ebay for about $40.
