Tyre size

Post by frogfeaturesFZR »

Hi guys, I've been offered a new Metzler 130/80 V18 for my FZR400 rear wheel. My question is ... will this fit my rim ?
I know I can run a 160/60 but does the'80' refer to the width of the tyre ?
Cheers Jim

130 would be the width
80 is the profile (sidewall) of the tire in relation to the width
18 is the rim size

I'd run stock width OR one size up on the width and down one on the profile.

Example:
Stock for my 1000 is 170/60 17
I'm running 180/55 17
This is one size up in width and down 1/2 size in profile.

froggy, current tire sizes are a polyglot of measurements. in point. a 160/60-18 when inflated on a applicible rim width (there's a table for width sizes for rims and tires) indicates that inflated tire width is 160mm (plus or minus 10 mm ) and the height is 60 % of the inflated width (again on proper rim width) and tire /wheel diameter is 18 inches. an important thing to note is that the tire profile (the contour of tires shape ) will change with rim width. ie a wider tire w/lower aspect ratio might give larger contact patch in uprite stance , but substancially less when heeled over. luck G

One of my friends has a pair of BT015's on his Honda . Specifically :

Front Tire 120/70ZR-17
Rear Tire 190/50ZR-17

Will these fit the FZR ? He's wanting to replace them with some faster tires. Pilot Powers. I think he has maybe 400 miles on the BT's. Anyone know if the '92 will take these tires ?

The front will fit for sure, the rear should fit as long as you have 5.5" rear wheel. If you can get them for really cheap, go for it. Some say a 190 is too big for a 5.5 but a lot of people are doing it. Some I hear have come to the realization that it is in fact too big as in it affects the turn in of the bike. Better straight line high-speed stability though.

Just as a side bar, the new Dunlop 209 Sportmax GP comes in a 190 intended for 600 production racers. The profile of this tire will not dramatically deviate when mounted on a 5.5" rim as other 190's might; however, it's only available in DOT race compounds.
