Clutch Whining

Post by Mike_SS »

Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced a problem I am having with one of engines. There is a failry high pitched whining/squealing type noise (loud) coming from the clutch basket area at low revs. Over a few grand the noise goes away. I have changed the large roller bearing that the basket runs on with no change.

Oh and I think the bottom end is an FZR.

Any advice appreciated,

Cheers

Did it start suddenly or progressively? Did you do any work on the clutch prior to the noise?

I'd strip it down, do a good inspection, replace any thing worn and reassemble.

Does the noise change in gear or in neutral? Clutch in or out?

It's an engine I bought off a guy that hadn't been run for awhile. He assures me there was no such noise last time he ran it. :)

No change with with clutch in or out or in gear. In fact I ran it briefly with no clutch plates or hub so as near as I can figure the only things spinning are clutch basket, oil pump and water pump. Changed the water pump and i don't think it is oil pump. Sort of hard to explain but it seems like the clutch basket itself but i can't for the life of me figure out what would generate the noise. The hub has been replaced at some stage as the rivets are not orginal. One of the tangs is broken but apart from that it looks OK.

I guess I could go to the extreme and pull another engine apart to swap bits. Bloody frustrating though!

Is the basket itself cracked? From the center outward.

Not that I could see but it is probably worth another look. Cheers

You may need to pull the basket and look at the backside. Maybe a bent ring gear? You did say that the rivets didn't look original, so I'd definitely pull the basket and look the whole assembly under good lighting.

gotta look in behind all the frictions and steels, they crack at the rivets apparently.

Face it Mike it's f**ked. Send it down and I'll have a look :) If you think about wheel bearings, they squeal when they are 'done' the only bearings as such are in the gearbox.

It won't be crank as plain bearings generally only knock, straight cut gears can whine but it is doubtful, probably a gearbox bearing? If the clutch basket was spinning so is the gearbox. Does it still have starter and alternator fitted? If so it could be alternator or related bits and pieces on that train.

Don't know about it but I am! :)

I actualy had the plates and hub out so that should have stopped the input shaft and gearbox from spinning? Changed water pump, starter motor, ditched alternator. It has gone in the to hard bin for now. Will try and get back to it next week.

Taking the alternator out doesn't remove the bearings that support the drive. Kick it over and have a listen around there :)

Oh jeezus... It was crap.
Okay, here's copy of an email answering the question sent after Jason lagged on me to a mutual friend...

it was wet for the first two sessions, and I had an oil leak from the clutch cover. Had a strange wallowing in and out of turns, but i think tyre pressures might have been a bit low for the type. Couldn't find any other reason for it, checked head bearings, took the damper off, backed of compression and rebound at the front a couple of clicks, checked the rear settings were at base etc. Last (3rd) session it felt better and started to push a little, but the oil was starting to hit the exhaust and the rear, so that was the end of it for me.

Jason went well on his 89 FZR, in fact he quite liked it. I think when he finally sheds the remaining 30 surplus to requirement kilos, he will be a force to be reckoned with!

In addition: the last session was without damper on a TLS at pretty much full pelt over the bits that would tie anything into knots. It was fine :)

Edit: Greg Leach editor of one of the trader mags wondered by and asked if the red bull can made it go any faster... I answered it will make you go a little bit when I stick it up your arse....

Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced a problem I am having with one of engines. There is a failry high pitched whining/squealing type noise (loud) coming from the clutch basket area at low revs. Over a few grand the noise goes away. I have changed the large roller bearing that the basket runs on with no change.

Yep, mines the same but more of a pronounced whine (could be a pom stuck in there...), but I only notice it cruising back up pit lane after the race in 2nd - and no it's not coming from 2nd gear.

Having just done a total nut and bolt rebuild of the motor I'm a bit stummped myself about the origin of the noise, but I suspect the primary gear may be the culprit (and I have taken out starter drive and alternator so It's definatley not coming from there).

I'll have the clutch back out soon when I fit the falicon clutch basket :banana and I'll have a good look at clearances then, probably by taking the hub and plates out and seeing if there is any excess backlash in the gears by moving the basket back and forwards.

If it is this, it could be because the hub has come from another bike at some time.

Anyway, I suspect this could be the source of your noise as well.

Cheers Kiwi. I only have spare YZF750 clutches or else I would have just changed it out to see if there was a difference. Could try the one out of the Peter Jackson but I am riding that this weekend :)

I will update when I eventually figure it out and look forward to hearing what you find.
